A tray of jewellery - necklaces, braclets and earrings - sat before her, gleaming brilliant colours in the faint sunlight. She looked each of the items over in turn, loving the sapphire on the silver chain as it shone cornflower blue and the ruby encased in gold that seemed to pulse with every moment that passed her by.
The piece that captured her attention was not either of those, however. It was the chunk of amethyst hanging from a delicate silver chain that drew her in. Unlike the others, it was raw and uncut. It was as it had undoubtedly been when it had been found: like no one had made even the slightest attempt at smoothing out the blemishes.
She liked that. It was beautiful in it’s most natural form. It made no promises of being something more than it was and that in itself made it more special. Without a thought, she reached for it and gently removed it from it’s hook.
“That one?” Jack asked from beside her with a knowing smile.
Sam nodded silently and held it out to him.
He gently unclasped the chain and looped it loosely around her neck, fiddling with it a moment longer and then letting it go. He stood back a little to inspect it and then nodded. “It’s beautiful,” he told her.
Again, Sam nodded. “I love it.”
She watched as Jack moved over to talk to the salesperson and then handed over a waft of bills. When he returned, she took his hand in hers and leaned up to kiss him quickly on the lips. “I love you, too, you know,” she murmured softly.
Jack rested his forehead against hers and smiled. “I know,” he said softly. “And I love you.”
Sam sank further into his embrace, the corners of her mouth twitching up. One hand searched her pocket for the gift she had bought for Jack and then she pulled back to slip it into his now empty hand. “I got you something, too,” she explained, earning a goofy grin.
“Yeah?” Jack asked.
She smirked. “Yeah.”
The paper was ripped off in seconds, revealing a set of keys. Jack’s eyes widened. “Do you mean,” he waved his hands in the air, ”what we talked about the other night?”
Nodding, Sam reached out once more and squeezed his hand. “I do,” she agreed. They shared a look that spoke of promises and many more nights spent together.
“Merry Christmas, Sam,” Jack finally said, thumb stroking the back of her hand.
Sam smiled up at him. “Merry Christmas, Jack.”
