"And then the demon came to planet Earth to eat her children, and the Slayer was called on once again to save the world!" Andrew shone the beam of his flash light up at his face, illuminating it in an eerie glow.
The potential slayers around him swapped exaggerated expressions of boredom and disbelief. Vi spoke up, "Andrew. Your stories are great, but... how many of them are actually real?" She squirmed where she sat after the words left her mouth, as if they physically hurt her to utter.
Andrew saw her question as a challenge of sorts. "You don't think that Buffy is powerful?"
"Yes, but-"
"Do you think I would lie and make up tales of her amazing-"
"Yes." A new voice.
Andrew frowned. "What?"
"Yes. That sounds exactly like what you would do."
All heads turned simultaneously to the new person in the room. Buffy stood in the doorway, hands on her hips and a quiet strength and annoyance in her eyes.
"Buffy," Andrew said. "I uh... we were just talking. About, uh, well, you."
"I heard," she replied. “So, there’s a children-eating demon now?”
“Yes. You know, Buffy. You know the one.” He pleaded with her, his eyes big and wide; he didn’t want to be made a fool of in front of so many of the potential slayers. That would ruin him and any credibility he had with them, which admittedly was not a lot but he was going to cling to what little he did have.
“Do I now?” she said.
“Yes! Don’t you remember? We were there and Xander was there and Willow was… well, Willow was still kinda evil and all black hair and eyes… And well, the demon went all angry-faced and claws and you went all uber!slayer and saved us all. But… it ate children, this demon, way back before it attacked us. It’s why we were hunting it.”
Buffy shrugged. “I don’t seem to recall-“
“Buffy, please just tell them.”
She studied him a moment, and then something occurred to her. She grinned and nodded. “Okay,” she said, beaming. Then she turned to the potentials. “There was a demon. Andrew was right about that. And it did eat children, too. This was one evil demon. “
“See? See what I said.”
“Only what Andrew is neglecting to say is that the demon attacked him. And might I remind you that this demon only goes after children.”
“Exactly!” Andrew said, before he caught up. “Wait. What?”
A number of the potentials laughed. Only a few bothered to stifle it or bite down and keep it inside.
“And that,” Buffy said, “Is why you shouldn’t listen to all Andrew has to say.”
Andrew stuttered after her, as she walked out of the room, “Buffy, but.. that’s not what happened! You weren’t supposed to…”
“Sure it wasn’t,” one of the potentials said. The group of them climbed to their feet and filtered out after Buffy.
“I guess Andrew’s tales of the slayer is over,” Andrew whispered to himself.
