“Argh!” Wash says. The tyrannosaurus rex in his left hand gnaws hungrily on the stegosaurus in his right. There’s the sound of two plastic toys mashing against each other and then the clang of a single toy falling to the control panel, dead. “Rest in pieces, Steggy,” he says in a rough voice, still in character as the t-rex.
He shifts in his seat and the corner of his shirt catches on the stegosaurus and knocks it to the floor. He bends down to pick it up and then readjusts himself in his seat. His body jerks involuntarily when he sees two big inquisitive eyes staring down at him. “Whoa! River! Are you trying to kill me with the creepy appearing out of nowhereness?” He clears his throat and slumps further back into his chair.
River shakes her head. “Playing pirates,” she tells him. “I wanted to hear.”
“Pirates?”
“Argh,” she explains. “Grr.”
“Yeah, that’s,” Wash says, “not pirates. Dinosaurs, River. See?” He shows her his toy dinosaurs, holding them up for her to study. “Grr. Argh.”
“Pirates say argh.”
Wash stares at her, wide-eyed. He blinks and opens his mouth to speak and then closes it again. His tongue darts out to wet his lips and he tries to form words again. No words come out.
River tilts her head to the side. “Pirate dinosaurs?”
