“Explain to me again why you thought this would be a good idea?” Zoe gave Wash a pained look. The amount of bad that had occurred was easy enough to guess if you just looked at her expression.
Wash grinned sheepishly. He shrugged. “How was I supposed to know that we’d be... interrupted?”
“Honey. When having a picnic, one should always choose a location that is away from angry bulls.”
“I know. But...! I just don’t think you’re seeing the whole picture here.” Wash leaned forward and kissed her forehead; she rolled her eyes. “See, grass and flowers and an open sky. No Alliance or shooting squads to worry about.”
“Yes?” Zoe said.
“All of it leads to what should be a perfect day.”
“I’m sorry to disappoint you, hon, but being charged by a bull isn’t my idea of fun.”
“There wasn’t supposed to be a bull. Next time I’ll check for them, okay?”
Zoe smiled softly.
“I’ll make sure there are no lions or tigers or bears, too.”
“Great,” Zoe replied. She pulled him close, one hand at the back of his head, and kissed him. When she moved back, she nodded in the direction of Serenity. “So, back to the ship?”
“We can have our picnic in the cargo bay instead,” Wash agreed. “Much less bulls there, if I recall.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
