The motel room is shabby, with peeling wallpaper, stained carpets and unmade beds with yellowing mattresses on top. The ceiling fan hangs at an angle that makes Sam cautious about turning it on and the lights flicker mercilessly from their bulbs.
“Well, I guess this is it,” he says, dumping his bag on the closest bed and turning to look at his companion. “It’s nothing special but we can make do.”
The girl smiles wryly and tosses her hair back. It’s dark brown, a little bit greasy and very long. Without a word, she climbs onto the second bed, moving across it on her hands and knees and yet somehow still holding a grace that fascinates him.
Sam closes the door, pauses as he considers turning the fan on again and decides against it, and then joins the girl on the second bed. The situation isn’t in any way perfect but he finds himself smiling anyway. He pushes some of the girl’s hair back behind her ear. “You okay with this?”
She leans forwards at once and presses a kiss to his mouth. “Better than okay,” she replies.
“That is great to hear, River,” he says. Forgetting the below average condition of their room and the motel, he captures her lips with his again and pulls her down to the bed.
