“Sometimes I wonder if you’re my guardian angel,” he tells her one day after she’s saved his life yet again.
She smiles at him, one of her quiet, mysterious smiles, and he can’t help but laugh at his own comment and grin at her.
“Stupid, huh?” he adds, shaking his head.
She doesn’t outright agree with him as he almost expects her to, but rather offers him a pensive look.
“Not stupid,” she replies. “I was sent to protect you and so in that sense I am your guardian. I do not, however, have wings.”
“You don’t have wings?”
“Angels have wings, do they not?”
“Oh! Yeah they do.” He studies her for a moment. “I suppose you’re just my guardian then.”
“Yes.” She nods.
“Doesn’t have the same ring to it.”
She looks blankly at him and he sighs. He’s just about to change the topic when she puts a hand on his arm. “I don’t have wings but I can be your guardian angel if you want.”
He nods and places his own hand on top of hers. His eyes meet hers and hold them. “I’d like that.”
