CHARACTER

✧ NAME: Kirachi Zukuno
✧ SERIES: Original Character
✧ HISTORY: Ioa and Illetria, two large countries caught in a territorial war over the land separating them. Illetria was winning - the army was larger, with a large percentage of the people in it being capable of large-scale magic spells. Ioa looked down upon magic and lacked the weaponry to make up for it. Over time, the territorial claiming pushed passed the middle land as Illetria sought to claim much of Ioa as well. Because of such, battles were often held on Ioan territory, with many of the citizens suffering as a result.

Kirachi was born towards the beginning of the war in the southern part of Ioa, far from most of the battles. Those who lived in the area considered themselves "safe" from the danger, thoroughly convinced that they were far enough from the border that no harm would ever come to them. Kirachi's family was a bit more paranoid, she grew up constantly hearing her mother's "what ifs" along with her dislike for the people in Illetria ("They're all a bunch of immoral, barbaric, no-good magic users!"), her belief that all of Ioa would eventually fall, her general distrust in their government to keep them safe...

Partially because of her mother's belief in their lack of safety and partially because she was constantly falling ill, Kirachi spent most of the first six years of her life inside. She had a poor immune system and was physically smaller and thinner than most her age. Her mother, Ari, being rather judgmental, talked about her illness as if she was better off dead and often neglected to give her the proper treatment she needed. Her father, Sen, often away due to work, was hardly even aware of her sickness.

As she grew older she also grew physically stronger, enough so that she wasn't constantly sick, although she was still catching colds more frequently than most. By the time she was eight, she was deemed healthy enough to be able to attend school. Ari insisted that she shouldn't go, as the war was picking up and she was even more paranoid about safety, but eventually decided to let her try. It was difficult - while Kirachi was getting sick considerably less than before, she was still ill often enough to have to take long breaks. When she wasn't taking breaks, she frequently became tired quickly and had a hard time keeping up with the rest of the class. She was also bullied by older, bigger classmates due to the fact that she was completely incapable of fighting back. Ari was frustrated with her dropping attendance and grades along with her lack of retaliation to the bullying. She pulled her out of school with an intent to homeschool her instead, although this quickly went downhill.

Ari lacked the patience to properly teach which was badly paired with the frustration of having to teach her in the first place. Verbal insults were starting to be flung here - small, at first, mostly stating that Kirachi was on a road to failure for not being able to handle real school without hiding behind sickness. This quickly escalated to being worthless for not being able to keep her grades up while she was in school, alongside how she was pathetic for not being able to stand up to those who were cruel to her. The schooling became more about Ari being judgmental and less about learning. Kirachi, hurt by the insults, tried her hardest to not listen. She started to isolate herself, taking her school books into the basement and spending most of the day teaching herself. Sen was still hardly around to keep Ari from her verbal torrents, and in the rare times he spent at home, Ari would often stay quiet and pretend as if everything was fine.

Life continued this way for another few years. Kirachi started to become hardened to it all. She was tired of it, sure, but she accepted it as something that couldn't be changed. She figured that she could continue on studying by herself and eventually, when she was old enough to move out, put it all behind her. Unfortunately, she wasn't that lucky. One night at dinner, during a particularly cruel slew of insults from Ari, she grew frustrated enough to yell back. At the same time, the empty chair at the table burst into flames. Kirachi, panicked, ran and hid in the basement as Ari worked to put out the fire.

She had magical ability. She had what everyone in her realm was scared to death of. She had what Illetrians had, not those in her somewhat pacifist country. Her mother had enough at that point, refusing to associate with Kirachi most of the time, and being even more verbally - and now physically - abusive in the rare times they did interact. Kirachi used this as an excuse to isolate herself more, spending most of her time locked in her room or in the basement.

By the time she was seventeen, the war had started to stretch to the southern part of Ioa. Kirachi's neighborhood was claimed to be in the range of a magical attack. Unfortunately, constantly sticking in the basement and away from most communication left her ignorant of this fact. Ari, however, was fully aware of this. During a rushed evacuation warning, she packed up and left. When questioned why her daughter wasn't with her, she claimed that Kirachi ran away before her.

Hours after the evacuation (which ended up being pointless - the damage never reached quite that far), Kirachi came up from the basement to find the house empty. Cue mild confusion. She shrugged it off at first, until the following day, when she concluded that no one was coming back. Cue epic confusion, followed by mild celebration over the fact that she was free from her mom's bitching, followed by "... so what do I do now?!" confusion.

Her decision? Pack a bag and leave as well. It was at this point that she realized that the neighborhood was a ghost town, with most people still gone from the evacuation. Still confused but determined to keep going anyway, she headed north into a neighboring town.

That place? Completely destroyed. Kirachi mentally cursed herself for forgetting the current political state of things. Of course it continued to spread south, of course her mother would fail to tell her and run off and hide instead...

She was confused again on what to do - there wasn't anything waiting for her where she came from. She didn't want to even look at her old home. There wasn't anything for her ahead, and she wasn't sure she wanted to run into any Illetrians that might still be wandering around, either.

She moved ahead anyway. And, as luck would have it, she did run into someone - a nineteen year old Illetrian boy named Tsuganu, who was part of the army and had been ordered to scope the area to check for survivors. However, he wasn't exactly a fan of his orders - or his position in the military in general, really - due to being forced into a draft. Kirachi freaked out upon meeting him, thoroughly convinced that he would kill her. During her spazzing, she let slip that she was just trying to get away from everything. Tsuganu took that chance to admit that, hey, he wasn't exactly pleased with life either. He explained his regional knowledge of the two countries and surrounding areas and proposed that they leave to a city outside Ioa that he was fairly certain that Illetria wasn't planning on touching.

Kirachi wasn't pleased with the idea at all as she was sure that, surprise surprise, you weren't supposed to just go wandering off with strangers, especially ones that have kindasorta been ordered to make sure you weren't alive. Tsuganu kept trying to assure her that he just wanted someone to travel with, he couldn't get away with trying to find someone at home, they could go their separate ways once they got to the city... Kirachi wasn't buying it. Frustrated, she turned to run away but she stopped as Tsuganu asked if she honestly had something to run back to. That hit a nerve. Defeated and unable to think of any other options, she agreed.

They spent the following months traveling on foot, taking back roads through forests and around large cities and battlegrounds as much as possible to avoid either of them being caught. Their temporary partnership started on a somewhat bad note - Kirachi still had a tendency to become tired easily, making travel difficult on some days to Tsuganu's dismay. She was also terribly distrusting about the entire situation as Tsuganu wouldn't tell her exactly what he was running from and why, he was just focused on moving forward. Over time, however, this slowly began to shift. They slowed down a bit so Kirachi would have more time to regain her strength, and during breaks in travel they finally started to converse and share their stories. For him, being forced into the military by his family due to their belief that he wouldn't be as successful as his three older brothers. For her, the sickness, the bullying incidents in school, her mother's belittlement, her father's constant absence, and the panic at the discovery she had magic. They continued to grow closer and support each other through their issues. Kirachi, constantly semi-jokingly planning out various futures for Tsuganu. Tsuganu, trying to convince Kirachi that she wasn't worthless like her mother had convinced her, along with trying to talk her into joining an apprenticeship for magic in the city that they were traveling to.

Things weren't to end well for their travels. A week before when they thought they would reach their destination, they were separated in an unusually crowded town. Tsuganu, while trying to search for Kirachi, was pulled aside by a tracker from Illetria who had been following them for several days. The tracker gave him a choice: Leave her, come back home, you'll both be safe. Stay with her, we'll kill her and force you back. Tsuganu chose option one. The tracker didn't keep his word and led Tsuganu outside town to a clearing in the middle of a forest and slit his throat.

Meanwhile, Kirachi was still lost in town. Continuing to push forward through the crowd led her into that same forest - just in time to see the murder. She panicked, knowing she was incapable of retaliating if the tracker was to come after her next. He didn't, however, opting to leave the scene with a lie: "I'm doing you a favor, he would've killed you anyway."

Kirachi wasn't too sure how to take that, it didn't make sense. Why did Tsuganu have to die, why did she allow herself to get separated in town, what did that guy mean with his statement, Tsuganu didn't mean to murder her, he would've had plenty of time to do that, why why why...

She forced herself to stop thinking about it and did the only thing that she figured she could do: Run away. She pushed herself to keep moving forward as fast as she was physically capable, desperate to get as far away from the clearing as possible.

A week later she stumbled into the city they were aiming for. Part of her was pleased for finally reaching that goal, but a larger part felt fatigued and lost. It was a new place for the new start she was looking for, sure, but she didn't know how exactly to make that start or if she even wanted to make it there without Tsuganu.

Wandering through the city, a large, round building caught her eye. As she took a closer look, she discovered it to be the magic school Tsuganu had previously mentioned to her. Unable to think of any other way to start her new life in this foreign place, she stepped inside.
✧ TIMELINE: Post-history. Kirachi is now 24 and spending most of her time as an apprentice to work on her magic.
✧ PERSONALITY: Years of emotional abuse has caused Kirachi to put up a fairly constant facade which she uses to keep most people at a distance. On the surface, she's a bit of a bitch. She is very blunt and straight-forward, never hesitating to state her (generally negative) thoughts about the people she interacts with and whatever situation she happens to be in. She is bitingly sarcastic, sometimes to the point of coming off as needlessly rude. She has little patience for ignorance and has a tendency to talk down to people she claims to be not worth her time. For the most part, she does what she can to keep people from getting emotionally attached to her - and vice verse. She has a difficult time fully trusting people, finding it easier to be disagreeable and generally unlikeable than to open up to people.

It's somewhat worth noting that Kirachi is good at getting herself in trouble. ... A lot. She's not a very good judge of who she should tone down her bitching around, and because of such she has a tendency of pissing off individuals who could probably take her down fairly easily. She's also insanely stubborn, and in most cases will keep being a bitch to those people anyway.

Despite her front, she does have a softer side that still wants company. Those who manage to stick around long enough despite her irritable demeanor will most likely start to see her open up a bit. In her friendships she is still sarcastic and a bit insulting at times, although there is much more of a teasing edge to it than before. In fact, she's more joking in general - Kirachi has a slightly derpy and silly side to her that comes out around people she's comfortable with. Those close to her will also see bits of what she's trying to hide behind her mask: a complete lack of self-worth, various self-confidence issues, her trust issues, and the reasons behind it all. These same issues, however, tend to keep her from giving her all in her relationships; although she does open up to others over time, she has a hard time believing she's good enough for the people she hangs around, or that she's deserving of friends, or that her friends will even continue to care about her.

In general, Kirachi is a very determined, duty-driven person. She prefers to keep herself busy with various jobs and studies and refuses to allow failure from herself. After being labeled as a failure as a child/teenager, she works hard to try to correctly accomplish everything she takes part in as a way to prove to herself that, yes, she is worth something. She also prefers to take a leadership position in most jobs, as she has a definite dislike for authority and would rather tell other people what to do than be given directions. However, she will (begrudgingly) step down and let someone more qualified take that place if necessary.
✧ ABILITIES/POWERS: Kirachi is a fire mage in training. While she's skilled in various spells, there are only a small handful she uses regularly. Specifically:

* Walls or pillars of fire. Pretty self-explanatory. These are defensive and used as shields. The pillars are somewhat small, standing at about five feet tall and are capable of movement. The walls, however, are considerably larger - think the height/width of a medium sized two-story house - and are completely stationary.

* Summoning fire birds. These are about the size of an eagle, and are... quite pesky. While this is one of Kirachi's favorite spells, she's not very good at controlling it, and it generally isn't used unless completely necessary. Best case scenario, it'll fly around a bit and maybe peck at people before turning into smoke. Worst case scenario, it'll turn against her and also peck at her a bit, along with setting the surroundings on fire with its wings, coughing fireballs at various things, and occasionally even summoning more fire birds by itself.

* Fireballs. Her default offensive spell, these are small (about the size of a soccer ball), fast, and also capable of exploding on contact... although Kirachi's not really a fan of explosives, so most times they end up setting things on fire before poofing into smoke.

* Fire tornadoes. Also somewhat self-explanatory. A large-scale spell, about the same size as a regular tornado and just as unpredictable and destructive. When created, it carries on the same way as a normal tornado would, moving on for several miles wreaking havoc until it dissipates.

Kirachi also carries around various weapons with her at all times, namely a whip and either a sword or a few daggers, although they're more for show than anything else. While she won't hesitate to pull them out if the situation calls for it, she's physically not that strong and prefers to stick to magic.
✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: Night

✧ MASK DESIGN:

✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: A small, circular clearing in the middle of a large forest.

SAMPLES

✧ FIRST PERSON: Holy Hell, where am I?! I really, really don't have time for this. Shitshitshit, I have things I was supposed to do today. Places to go, people to see, blahblahblah everyone says this, I know, but still. This - shit!! Alright, can someone please tell me the nearest exit? Preferably before I punch something. Please. Please.

By the way, there is a strange mirror in this room and it's mildly disturbing. I'm fairly certain that's my room in the mirror, not my reflection at all like it should be. What is this thing supposed to be, some backwards horror movie "Oh no, you fell through a mirror and now you're in a special place away from home" nonsense? Ugh, I can't. I don't even. This is - ... Bah.
✧ THIRD PERSON: Kirachi hated boredom. Stagnancy of any sort made her think, and thinking turned into over thinking and over thinking turned into remembering and remembering turned into self-loathing and that was just bad. No, boredom was far from a friend, and Kirachi felt the need to keep herself occupied at all times.

A snowstorm had prevented her from her original plans of going out to town to look for books to read. She wasn't sure what sort of books she wanted, really, she just needed something to look at and keep her busy over the weekend. She had plenty laying on her shelf, but she hated rereading. While those around her encouraged her to enjoy books a second time around, she hated knowing what was going to happen. When she knew what was going to happen, she was less interested in the book, more likely to space out while reading the story, more likely to think...

But thinking was bad and she was definitely not going to do that. She threw open the curtains on her window, revealing nothing but pure white.

"Snowed in," she muttered. "Brilliant. Just brilliant. No hope in going out in this mess."

Kirachi stared through her window a bit longer, mentally willing the snow to disappear or melt or explode in a bunch of fluff, she wasn't picky at this point. She just wanted it gone. She moved to her bookshelf, scanning the rows of books for anything that might keep her attention for the day. No luck here - she'd pull a book out, flip through, shove it back on the shelf. Pull out another, stare at the cover, make a disapproving face and throw it in the trash. Pull out yet another, flip through, stop to actually read the first few pages, decide it's horribly boring and throw it on the floor.

Frustrated, she flopped over on her bed and buried her face in the pillow. This was not how she preferred to spend her day.

✧ ORIGINAL CHARACTER QUESTION: First, once Kirachi understands where she is, she's going to be in absolute denial of it. The whole place is going to appear to be an impossibility to her, and she's going to treat it as "Oh, I'm just dreaming or hallucinating or both and soon I'll wake up and life will be normal again!" Or, at least, she will until she realizes that Promenade is her home now. At that point, she'll start learning to adjust, although somewhat reluctantly. She'll wear the masks, sure, but she's not going to like them. Not being able to talk at night? Inconvenient, definitely, but at least that gives her an excuse to not feel required to communicate. Over time, once the initial shock finally wears off, she's going to end up preferring Promenade to her home and treat her life there as another "new start" of sorts.
