A beautiful actress and her son are running around Prospect Park one sunny afternoon in Brooklyn. She was tall and slim and wore a white dress that flowed in the wind, accompanied by her silky dark hair. They laugh and play as the mother chases her son around the busy field. The mother becomes exhausted and stops. She hoped today no one would bother her for an autograph or a picture.
"Go play with the other kids for a minute, mommy needs a break, " she says.
She walks over towards a bench and sits down to the left of a young man. He was nicely dressed in a blue striped collar shirt, black slacks and black dress shoes. His hair was gelled up and he smelled like Chanel when she sat down.
"Beautiful day isn't it?" She asked.
"Yes, very nice." He said.
"Jessica" she said, extending her hand.
"Matt," he met her hand, "he's cute."
"Thanks, he got it from his father that's for sure."
He nodded.
"Do you have any kids?" said Jessica.
"Nah. Not me," he said. "I figure maybe someday I'll adopt."
"Oh. That's nice." she said.
They sat and watched the children and couples buzz around the green field, an awkward silence and the smell of freshly cut grass.
"What kind of kid do you think you'd adopt?"
"It's kind of a rough decision. If I choose one that's young I know one day I'll have to explain to him why he'll never meet his mother, and why I'm not his real father; who knows how he'll take that. If I get one that's older he may not be accepting or in agreement with the matter itself. It's just a problem you have to deal with I guess."
"I see what you mean." said Jessica.
"I come to this park a lot to watch the kids and their parents. It's never something that really made me depressed growing up. I guess it's the whole idea that even if I do have a kid one day he'll never have my eyes, my stinginess, or maybe his mother's laugh. He'll never have the same upbringing as the rest of his friends. He's never really mine, just pretend."
Jessica lowered her eyebrows as she looked off to the right.
"You know, its one thing to say 'mom, dad, instead of a daughter-in-law you'll have a son-in-law,' but it's a whole another thing to say 'mom, dad, you will never be real grandparents.' And god bless them maybe that doesn't bother them. Sometimes you just have to deal with what life throws at you, you know?"
"I guess I never thought about it," she said. "When did you know?"
"A long time ago. I sort of ignored it for a while, but in the end I just want to be happy, even if that means more to deal with."
A plane flew by over them as they sat and looked ahead at the green and blue canvas before them. A slight breeze came through. After much thought Jessica spoke:
"I'm sure-
"Mommy come try this!"
Her son stood off to her side, excited enough to burst.
"Um, I'm coming honey!" she uncomfortably exclaimed. She turned to her new best friend, "It was...nice meeting you Matt." she said apologetically.
"You too dear." he said with a smile. He then looked ahead.
As she walked after her exuberant son her mind was a mess. Everything was upside down. She struggled to stay on the ground almost. What had just happened? Is someone going to yell 'cut!'? She tried to sort it all out, wishing someone would just tell her how to feel. All interrupted by a gentle tap on her left shoulder. She turned around. It was a young girl gripping a magazine.
"Excuse me...are you Jess Fortunato? Could I have your autograph?" she nervously asked.
The young actress stood there for a moment, then smiled.
"Sure. What's your name?"
