A small laugh. "Grasonville."
"How far back does that set us?" he asks. I breached the Pentagon.
She squints at the legend. "About fifty miles."
"Whatever was in that cave is gone. Buried forever."
"They were mitigating risk," Scully sighs, yawning.
"You were a Betty back in the day," he teases, to wake her up.
"Back in the day," she echoes.
Without taking his eyes from the highway, Mulder rests one hand on Scully's knee. She doesn't react, but after a moment he feels her cool fingertips slip under the cuff of his dress shirt. Her thumb brushes against the buttons on his jacket sleeve.
The night-black road unspools ahead and with nothing more to say, they silently follow it home.
