Scully realized she had come to the end of the last page in her book and exhaled, as if she felt a little death inside her. She already knew this was the first of many and she had to explain it; flipping to the front of the well-worn book, she scribbled an inscription inside the front cover to him, hoping it would one day summarize everything she had seen and everything she had come to believe. Or, if something should take her life, these first but last words would give him hope that there was at least one truth in the world they both knew.
"Fox, I began this field journal as comfort to rationalize that I could not explain around us. Somewhere between the lines it became more than this-it grew into evidence of what I feel for you. Since this time, I have never feared my death, neither to the cancer or the dangers we face daily; I have only feared that you would never know how my journey came to pass.
As you read these words that follow, as you remember where you were and what you felt yourself during this time, please know that I believed in you.
I always have."
Signing the inscription "Dana," she traced a finger over her handwriting and inwardly hoped that this journal would be given to Mulder by her herself many years from now and not by someone else.
