Nothing Important Happened Today.
Nothing important happened this season either, k?
Bye! See you when we do I Want To Believe!
...
Ok fine. But I'm warning you, I hate this season. At least Season 8 had its redeemable moments. This one? Contain a few things that fill me with so much ire, I can't even think about it without busting a blood vessel in my forehead.
First things first: fancy new credits. I do love that there is a list in there, different with each episode, with fan names from the official XF message board. While I never went on that particular board back in the day (not much anyway), some of the names I do recognize from elsewhere. That is a really neat thing to do, I have to say.
So let's get this part out of the way: Mulder. Goes on the run (with like 17 pieces of luggage - so inconspicuous!) Runs away from the people who probably need more protecting than he does. Why not have him be offscreen and doing stuff around? Or why not have him take the baby with him and thus increase the chances of protecting them both? They want to make him seem like a deadbeat father I guess, which is not cool with me. As we'll find out, it may not have been Mulder's decision to leave. BUT STILL. God it sucks. And that's why I loved the TWoP recaps...the randomly inserted moments pretending Mulder was out picking up movies at Blockbuster. Or taking the kid to Gymboree. Or whatever. Good times. It kept me sane. And it's not a popular thought but I wish Gillian hadn't signed onto Season 9 either - I think things would have been so much better. A clean cut, if you will, between the old XF and the new one; the stories of this season themselves (the ones that I'm opposed to) wouldn't have needed to even happen.
What also sucks? Making baby William into a supersoldier or whatever the hell he's supposed to do with the moving things with his mind at LESS THAN A WEEK OLD. I hate this plot with a passion. Fine if the kid is unusual in someway but not making him part of the mytharc as such. What a mistake (IMO).
We meet Xena D'Anna Lucy Lawless who is like a damn mermaid or something. And Westley Cary Elwes as another agent with connection to Reyes. It's not that interesting and I'm much too busy thinking about everything else in this episode than this side plot. Though, this time around I have a huge appreciation for Lucy and her acting (thank you BSG) and I think she's kind of awesome.
New William is definitely not as cute as Existence William. Sad. :(

Mulder Butt. I think David's stand in or whatever looks weird here.
Miracle Baby does not seem to fill Scully with the expected amount of joy.

Extra
The opening titles get a major revamp for this last season. The basic concept is still there, but some images are added. One shot shows a list of "FBI Contacts, Witnesses, and Contributors." The names on this list are actually the screen names of posters on the official "X-Files" message board and changed with each new episode that season. Other names on the list were anagrams of characters on the show.
The character of Brad Follmer is named after creator Chris Carter's writing assistant.
"Nothing important happened today" (or words to that effect) was the entry King George III of England made in his personal diary on 4 July 1776. (Since he could not have known about the events occurring in the colonies for several weeks, his comment is often cited as a bit of historical irony.)
