This case is assigned by Skinner because of the cult aspect. I’m okay with that, even in the face of missing Mulder. The unexpected pregnancy complications are Lamesville though, for the reasons southoffebuary describes. Also, we know what's going to happen and it's not particularly dramatic, so, meh.

Doggett’s even giving Skinner lip about how he doesn’t know shit about the case. Doggett? You are NOT Mulder. You said it yourself. This means you do not get to be cocky with your superiors. Respect the fucking chain of command, especially when it is Skinner.

My other option for this season was to assume that Mulder didn’t really get abducted and Scully just keeps him tied up at her apartment. This is the first episode that makes me want to run with this theory. Mulder’s currently holding her hand while they look at baby test results and smile. Yep.

I wonder if this episode was a test to see if the show could carry on with Doggett/Skinner, with the idea that Skinner could be busted down for his belief in the x-files and Doggett would be the skeptic. Problem with this is that neither man has the knowledge base to really play their own role. Doggett only refuses to believe and doesn’t try to disprove or prove. Skinner doesn’t have the encyclopedia of the weird in his head like Mulder did.

I know they want us to believe that Doggett’s crippling fear is that he’ll kill Scully so that we’ll see how dedicated he is to her and how much he wants to help her, but 1) I think it’s also a way to make him seem manly, not giving him a weakling fear like FIRE or something, 2) Mulder would have laughed at someone who told him he’d kill Scully, 3) He’s only been her partner for… six episodes now? It’s a bit overwrought.

I miss Scully and Mulder.

Agreed. Its a case of too much too soon. Like if this episode had been towards the end of the season, or in season 9 and Scully and Doggett had gone through even a 10th of what M&S went through then ok, I could believe it. But the creepy dreams are silly. It would've made more sense that he was dreaming about killing Skinner while they were on the case together or something.

I actually think this episode is one of those ones that is supposed to aid the theory of Doggett being in love with Scully.

Oh and I think you're right, I think they did do this ep to test the Skinner/Doggett dynamic for next season. They should've tried out the Scully/Skinner dymanic first - with bonus sexytimez.
