You may be right. Changing one's core personality may not be possible, or even desirable. That wasn't what the story was about, to me. For Mulder, the issues he was addressing in therapy were twofold and were what had led to their separation. He had to deal with the unresolved pts related to his abduction, torture, death, and resurrection, I guess, for lack of a better word. And he had to begin to grieve the loss of their son, and address his guilt about it and his anger toward himself and Scully, too. Scully has her own related issues, of course, which added in caused the breakdown in their relationship.
Do we like to see them struggling? I'm not sure I do anymore.
After so many years of writing about these characters and watching them suffer on screen, I'm ready to see them happy, whether it be together or apart. I don't even ship them and I still would have been happy to have the series end with the final scene from "Existence": Mulder holding William, Mulder and Scully acknowledging what they mean to one another, and the three of them being together.
God. I am sorry. Watching the new episodes is bring up feelings I'd buried long ago. The truth is I'm still bitter about the way it worked out for them and the current series is doing nothing to help those feelings.
I should stick to the story we're discussing. I'm glad you liked it. I hope you'll go on to read "Resident" and keep coming back to discuss fic with us.
