A young bicyclist killed in downtown Portland on Thursday has been identified as a West Salem High School graduate.
Tracey Sparling, 19, was living in Portland and attending the Pacific Northwest College of Art, said Jenni Henderson, 19, a childhood friend.
A cement truck struck and killed Sparling as she rode her bicycle through the intersection of NW 14th Avenue and W Burnside Street. She died a few blocks from her apartment.
Sparling graduated from West Salem High in 2006 as a salutatorian.
She was yearbook editor at the high school and had spent her freshman year of college studying journalism at Syracuse University. Sparling transferred to the Portland art school because she was homesick, Henderson said.
“Our senior year, she basically carried the yearbook on her shoulders alone,” Henderson said. “She designed nearly everything in it.”
Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
