It'll be interesting to hear if you think it's worth me catching up on DVD when the season is over.
You know, I'm so terrible (and feel horrible) about telling other people whether or not they should watch something. So, if anything I'm about to say in this long-ass reply sounds interesting, you may be okay to binge it? IDK. Depends, I think, on how S2 left you feeling. . . .
My love for Hannibal diminished significantly during the hiatus when I had time to think about the events of S2. Mainly how the female characters got treated and the show moved from an ensemble to "Will and Hannibal: Murder Husbands Hour". I love, love S1 dearly, and compared to S2 the show, for me, dipped severely in quality.
For S3, the show (again: to me) feels like it's crawled up its own ass and become very, very pretentious. I always thought the show was good at blending gorgeous shots of blood sprays or artistic renderings of someone's thoughts, while also advancing the plot. The first 3 eps of S3 were very meandering and the "artistic-ness" of the show has started to drain the life out of the plot. I don't know if you saw my reaction to the premiere, but that's how this season has felt. Then, the plot advancement that does come is at breakneck speed because of how slow the beginning episodes were.
I don't know if you're familiar with Vincenzo Natali, but I blame a lot of the problems on him regarding the pacing and over-use of artistic "Getty shots". He's directed 4 of 6 episodes so far and they were sooooooo boring to me. Though, looking at his IMDB page, I see he directed Cube, which I liked a lot, so I don't know what's happened. Anyway. . . .
And now that Fuller is verging into Harris's actual stories (Hannibal and Hannibal Rising first half, Red Dragon, back half), I feel like the originality is gone. Fuller isn't changing up the canon as much as I thought he would or putting a new spin on it. If you've seen the movies, the show is somewhat copying them. It feels repetitive and predictable and the "omg what is happening???" factor is kinda gone.
It's bizarre to me that they are apparently doing the Red Dragon thing straight away.
Yeah, Red Dragon is taking place over the last 6 episodes and I have mixed feelings on it. RD was supposed to be S4, and I would've given my kingdom for an entire 13-episode arc of RD. Suffice it to say, Hannibal will be captured, put in jail, and then between Eps 7 and 8 there will be a time jump to get into RD. As a viewer, that makes me itchy and I don't think they're going to pull off the "it's been years since Will and Hannibal have met" when, in reality, it'll only be a week that's passed.
As you said with the wheelchair, Fuller has pilfered a lot already from Red Dragon--lines and dialogue, mostly--that either he's going to try and "parallel" events or stick with the canon and go, "Well, that's how it goes in the book!" Like I said, my enthusiasm for RD being this great, epic arc has dropped dramatically after seeing how Fuller translated Hannibal and Hannibal Rising for the show.
