Once upon an April Fools day

Apr 01, 2015 09:52

Once upon a time in what seems like another lifetime, April 1st fell on the same Sunday that the daylight saving change happened. I think it was 1990 and I was in my brief foray into the Navy as a linguist. That morning I was also scheduled to be on watch at 6AM.

At 5AM there was a heavy knock on my door. “Corey, you’re supposed to be on watch.”, a voice said.

I looked up and squinted at the clock. 5:05. “I’m not on till 6AM, go away.”

“It’s 6AM now.”

“No, it’s 5AM. I have a clock. Go away!”

“Today is daylight saving day.”

“Oh I know what day it is, today is April 1st. Nice try. Now go away.”

“No, it really is 6AM.”

“I said I’m not falling for it. I’ll be there in an hour, now f*ck off.”

There was some murmuring of discussion outside the door and then they left. When I arrived the clock at the watch station said 7AM and I shook my head at their attention to detail with this hoax. Then they told me that, no, it really is daylight savings and I really was an hour late, but they thought about it and none of them would have believed it either, so they just took my first hour for me. There were some nice folks in the language institute.
