30_kisses, naturally. No spoilers or warnings (well, the spoilers are there, but so vague that you won't get them if you don't already know what's being talked about).
She’s waiting for him outside the castle when he leaves, after the wounded have been seen to and the shock has worn off but before the victory celebrations have started. It’s when he won’t be missed- once he’s been accounted for as alive, but before he’s really noticed and drawn into anything.
“It’s over?” Sierra asks him, subdued. The entire situation seems to have shaken her, enough so that she wouldn’t come to the castle with him or speak with anyone she knew from the last war on the rare nights she visited. There are some things about her Nash will never really understand, things that have to do with True Runes that carry memories of the past and visions of the future.
“It’s over,” Nash answers. He’s tired and it bleeds into his voice, enough so that even he notices the difference. “I think I’m getting too old for this.”
“And you call me the old hag,” Sierra retorts, but the humor only lightens things for a moment. “...but not old enough yet, right?”
“Almost,” he says, taking one of her hands in his. “The only things I’ve found in all of these years are war and wandering, and I’m starting to think there isn’t anything else to find.”
“Of course there’s more.” It’s strange, because usually their positions are reversed. Nash is normally the optimistic one, the sun to her moon. “It just takes more than one lifetime to find.”
He has her left hand in his, he notices, and kisses it in a courtly gesture. The crescent-moon of her rune is cooler than the rest of her hand and he’s again drawn to thoughts of what sort of future it may have shown her.
“We’ll have to start looking now, then,” he says, a smile finally breaking over his tired face. “You have quite a head start on me.”
They continue down the road away from the castle, on the path that will take them north, to the lands they haven’t seen yet.
