[Hikaru no Go] "Go Robot"

Birthday fic for bikun!

This is unapologetic fluff. The fic equivalent of birthday cake, if you will. Touya/Shindou.

“That move is totally weird,” Shindou complained, gesturing to the move that had turned the game in Touya’s favor. It was unconventional, but not terribly so- especially considering who was pointing it out.

“As if you have any room to talk about weird moves,” Touya countered, pointing to another placement of stones on the other side of the board. “What you did there was just stupid.”

“It would have been just fine if you hadn’t done some weird move out of nowhere.” Shindou rocked back on his knees, leaning away from the board between them. “I promised Waya I would help him and Isumi go over kifu from the pro exam with Nase tonight- oh, great.” He’d looked down at his watch (a sixteenth birthday present from some relative, and he actually hadn’t managed to lose it yet) and groaned. “I’m already late.”

“Then go, instead of complaining about it.” Touya began to put the stones away, the way he usually didn’t do until after Shindou had stormed out of the go salon in a fit of rage.

“I guess- hey, Touya.” Shindou suddenly paused. “Do you ever do anything besides play go here?”

“Don’t be stupid, Shindou.” Touya doesn’t look up when he speaks, as if the question were too idiotic to warrant it. “I play go with my father, too. And the study group at my house- you’ve been there before.”

“I don’t mean playing go with your dad and Ogata and all of them. Do you ever do anything else? Like, go out? Or even play against the other guys our age, the ones in the lower dans?” Shindou asked him in frustration.

“...no, why would I?” Touya sounds genuinely puzzled by the idea. “I won’t improve much playing against weak opponents.”

“God, Touya, no wonder you have no other friends.” Shindou stalked back into the room, looming over Touya. “Come on, I’m taking you with me.”

“What- Shindou, I don’t think that’s a very good idea. I get the impression that your old insei friends don’t like me very much.” Touya finished putting the stones away and straightened his collar as he stood up. “And barging in on a group without notice is rude.”

“Please, like Waya cares about being polite. He’ll complain about you being there for about five minutes, and then Isumi will tell him to shut up. You’re not a go robot- well, okay, I don’t think you’re a go robot. You need to hang around other people sometimes, too.” Shindou took Touya by the arm and pulled him bodily from the goban and out of the go salon.

“Shindou, you forgot your backpack,” Touya pointed out calmly, and they’re forced to backtrack so that he can retrieve it.

“How do you notice stuff like that?” Shindou complained, crossing his arms. “Maybe you are a robot, after all.”

“I am not a robot.” Touya said, obviously irritated by the comparison.

“You kiss like a robot,” Shindou taunted him.

“What- Shindou, I do not!” Touya flushed a dull red at the words, and looked around to make sure no one had heard. “And we’re in public!”

“Robot, robot, robot!” Shindou continued to taunt, dancing out of reach as they walked down the street.

And then they were on a deserted side street (when had that happened?) and Touya pushed him against the side of a building and kissed him.

“What happened to being in public?” Shindou asked, though he didn’t seem to have a problem with the situation.

“Shut up, Shindou.”

Things continued like that for a little while, until Shindou’s cell phone rang. It was an annoying pop-song ringer that made Touya’s forehead twitch.

“Don’t answer that,” Touya said, kissing him again.

“Touya, I have to- what if it’s my mom?” Shindou protested breathlessly, pulling the phone out of his pocket and hitting the button. “Hello? Oh, hey, Waya-“

Touya pulled the phone out of Shindou’s hand.

“He’s busy right now,” he said, and hung up the phone.

“God, Touya, no wonder you don’t have any other friends.” Shindou reiterated, putting the phone back in his pocket. “But I guess you don’t kiss like a robot. You still act like one, though.”

“What are you kids doing over there?” Someone called out from a doorway down the street.

“Guess we’ll have to go to Waya’s, after all.” Shindou said, pulling Touya back out onto the main street. “Although he might want to hit you after the way you hung up on him. Or take you apart.”

“Shindou, for the last time, I’m not a robot.”
