Bolded the ones I REALLY liked and that resonated especially with me. Not to say the others weren't good, but there were a few I especially liked.

1. Foundation -- Isaac Asimov
2. Walking the Dog -- Bernard McClaverty
3. The Years of Rice and Salt -- Kim Stanley Robinson
4. The Book of Negroes -- Lawrence Hill
5. Crow Lake -- Mary Lawson
6. Three Cups of Tea -- Greg Mortensen
7. A Golden Age -- Tahmima Anam
8. The Bone People -- Keri Hulme
9. Eat, Pray, Love -- Elizabeth Gilbert
10. Run -- Ann Patchett
11. Robinson Crusoe -- Daniel Defoe
12. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time -- M. Haddon
13. The Book Thief -- Markus Zusak
14. Green Grass, Running Water -- Thomas King
15. Great Expectations -- Charles Dickens
16. The Catcher in the Rye -- J.D. Salinger
17. Little Women -- Louisa May Alcott
18. a complicated kindness -- Miriam Toews

I'd have to say my top 3 recommendations would be The Book of Negroes, Three Cups of Tea, and The Book Thief. All relate to issues of relations between different races or ethnicities as well as literacy and education. Loved them.
