Maybe it's because I've been a Marvel girl most of my fannish life. Marvel... well, to paraphrase much better writers than me, Marvel treats continuity like a wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey thing. They reboot continuity every, oh, 5 years. Every 10-12 years, it's a "serious" reboot & you get the Ultimate Line or Siege Perilous. Heck, we just did Age of X which was kind of like Age of Apocalypse rebooted. Big change doesn't phase me. Much.
Yes, a lot of our favourite C-list characters may not survive. But they might also become HUGE. They want to keep Jaime Reyes, guys, the character who lost his solo title due to sales loss. Yes, I have major, major issues with the JLA having 1 token female & 1 token person-of-colour but we haven't heard what the other 51 titles will be.
Clark Kent might be younger, not married to Lois Lane & be in a relationship with someone else. That sounds a heckuva lot like Smallville to me &, TBH, if DC will let me enjoy their courtship all over again on the heels of my Smallville mourning, I will be ALL OVER THAT SHIT. Reboots gave us Star Wars 2009. It gave us Nolanverse Batman & not 1 but 2 Spiderman movie franchises. It gave us the whole SLEW of 90s animated cartoons. I BELIEVE IN PUPPIES & RAINBOWS, GAIZ. I HAVE TO.
Like this article says, "The status quo in comics MUST change in order for it to survive. If that change is to bring characters back to a purer version of their core concept, then so be it; comics must make waves in order to generate controversy to get media attention to get new readers." Is it a media grab? Yes. So was the "Death of Superman" arc. It made my dad collect comics again. It gave us Steel & Kon-el. Dick Grayson as Batman made way to Tim Drake as Red Robin which is, quite frankly, AWESOME.
When the universe gets shaken up (again), the blocks will always fall in the same place. They have to. The characters & their relationships to each other have lasted this long because it WORKS. So you'll save money for a few years waiting for things to tumble back. I'm sure you've always wanted to try something new-- a new title, salsa dancing, maybe some MMA lessons. Then, when the dust settles, our favourite DC characters/relationships will be there.
If not, we'll always have fanfic.
