Yes, yes, I know I'm uncouth

Springsteen and/or Cyclops fans, I have a question: If Scott Summers was just-turned-10 and adopted into a loving, functional family after his plane crash, which Bruce Springsteen song would he use to teach himself to play the guitar?

Thunder Road has a relatively easy guitar part (at least, it sounds that way to my ears. I know nothing about guitars.). And it's a signature Bruce song that any guitar playing Bruce fan needs to know.

Ditto for Born to Run, though it might be a little bit harder for a learning-to-play song.

It also depends on when Scott is turning 10 and when he got into Bruce. If it's in the mid 70's, then he has basically Born to Run as the record to go off of, maybe even something off of The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle, but I don't see this happening unless Scott has exceptionally developed taste in music for a 10 year old. But if it's the 80's, he'd probably learn something off of The River or Born in the U.S.A.

Did I over-think that enough for you? XP

It's the 80's. His foster parents listen to country 99% of the time. Foster dad is a huge, huge, HUGE Johnny Cash fan), foster brother has no preference (but he'll switch the station to NPR if no one minds). Foster brother's best friend is the one who listens to non-country/pop stations which is how Scott was introduced.

ETA: Okay, um, I'm in love with Thunder Road. I really was too young to appreciate Bruce Springsteen the first time around outside of "Born in the USA."

ETA 2: Okay, I must consume the Nebraska, The River, and Born to Run albums.

Ok, so he would definitely know about Thunder Road and Born to Run. But if you want him to be all "Man, I can't get away from this song being played on the radio", then something off of Born in the USA might be apropos. 'Cover Me' would be the big hit off of that album that he could actually play a guitar to but that might be a little ambitious for a first song. "I'm on Fire" would be a little bit easier and "Glory Days" would be a nice poppy song for him to learn.

I've been pondering this question -- do you actually want a song that is easy to learn on the guitar or do you want one that fits him emotionally? I think I have a whole post on the topic somewhere :).

It would be great if the song also fits him emotionally because that would motivate him to learn it.

If you're going for melancholy, I'm partial to Darkness on the Edge of Town, which, while I'm not that good at figuring out guitar parts, only seems to have a few chords (I can upload if you want). If you're looking for the adventurous longing to conquer the world, "Thunder Road" is your song.

I'm amused that there's this much overlap b/t Springsteen & Cyclops fans. Amused but not surprised.

I'm pretty sure this is your influence. Because I usually write movie!Scott as my age, his teenagehood happened in the 90's. For some reason, comicverse!Scott seems like he was a teenager in the 70's/80's.

I did in fact already do a post about this. If you hit my Springsteen tag, in fact, you'll see a lot off posts on related topics. Because, my brain.

Woot! I think I've read this but it's still so very helpful. It's probably the source of this train of thought.

I'm totally sold for either one. Did your sister have lessons before? Because this Scott has only had music classes in school & half-remembered lessons from his parents.
