Family legend says this was deliberate timing

Back from another weekend in Seattle for Daddy & BabySister's birthdays. Yes, they've got the same birthday. They also look freakishly alike. We went down for a resort type trip so Dad could play with his camera & BabySister could spend a lot of her birthday money. I spent a lot of time at Borders, bewildered.

I don't think I've read a fiction novel in at least 2 years, at least not new ones. I don't even know where to begin. If you, dear flist, could recommend me as many novels as possible, I would be most grateful. I used to read mostly urban fantasy (including YA ones), fairy tale/folklore retellings & romances. I think those are still my interests but I'd like to widen my horizons. I do love vampire/monster lore, just not the kind that sparkles or has co-dependent main characters.

Then I remembered I was broke & there are plenty of libraries around.

I trust you, flist! Rec me, please!

ETA: Thanks everyone for the recs so far! Please keep them coming. I'm also going to start a memories topic or something if you have recs in your personal LJs. This is something I want to keep going for the next few months until my library book list starts looking ridiculous, say, 200 titles or so. ;)
