Even curled in fetal position, the muses would not leave me alone
Flist, flist, flist, guess what, flist, guess what?! I had my first migraine headache. It wasn't severe or anything, it was, at best, a "normal" migraine but, how do chronic sufferers handle that? Oh dear GOD, that is some NASTY shit. It is NASTY and I say this as someone who gets regular back pain, merci beaucoup, Uterus.
I woke up with a pain under my eyebrow and in my sinuses kind of like someone pressing two fingers really hard against the bone. A-ha! says, I, I will use my knowledge as a nursing student and nip this in the bud. I will get extra-strength Advil before this becomes a very painful headache. Perhaps I'm dehydrated; it's been quite hot lately.
About half an hour later, the pain shifted to deep in my head, towards the nose-side of my eyeball. The two fingers had become a teensy, weensy battering ram wielded by teensy, weensy Evil Things trying to crush the bones around my right eye and right sinus. an away-team of teensy, weensy Evil Things ran around to the back of my head to do the same to the bones there. And the light! Dear God, the liiiiiiiight!
Migraines = NASTY
The cure-all in East Asian households is Whtie Flower Oil. I swear by the damn thing for any ailment that ends with the suffix "-ache" excluding actual ingestion. So, two drops on teach temple, across my forehead and in the back of my head then Mom (loooooooooves my Mom) pressing the pressure points and I semi-pass out.
In my half-conscious state, my brain comes up with a theory on why green kryptonite (GK) poisoning is so painful. Here goes:
Kryptonite radiation somehow disrupts the cellular biochemical pathways in kryptonians. It competes with the cell receptors on kryptonian skin for light/energy spectrum from the sun. I may or may not have mentioned before that my fanon includes a crystalline kryptonian skin, for better to absorb solar energy.
This is especially dangerous with the pathway that transport oxygen into the cell for cellular respiration. This is essentially how GK works. Without oxygen, the cells die. Necrotising tissue HURTS. We're talking all the cells, including all the tissue in the chest which help you mechanically breathe in and out, the lungs, the blood vessels in the lungs, etc. Skin, muscle and bone tissue are especially wretched when they're dying. Because they're so sensitive to radiant energy, the radiation from kryptonite works faster in kryptonians than humans. This is why humans get cancer with prolonged exposure to kryptonite while kryptonians are incapacitated immediately.
Each colour of kryptonite radiates at a different energy level hence the different effects. Green is the deadliest, causing total disruption of biochemical pathways. Red, in Smallville!verse, acts like alcohol perhaps adjusting one of the pathways to release or enhance brain chemicals that are similar to endorphins or GABA. Blue in Smallville!verse or Gold in Comic!verse, negates powers so perhaps it works like Green only at lower levels. I have absolutely no explanation for Black Kyrptonite in Smallville!Verse though.
