Well, that was exciting. As you can see, I'm fine. Casualties seem to be low, however from the number of people driving around last night in the dark with no traffic lights, I imagine there'll be A&E reports later

Thanks. Yeah, I really picked the right weekend for it didn't I? :-)
Mostly it was better west of the park, and worse east of it, the areas towards the coast suffering more from liquefaction. Things got tossed around pretty bad at the university and in shopping centers; some areas are totally undamaged (like Upper Riccarton and Ilam), while other people have lost their houses and shops. Some people are still panicky, others are totally cool. The patchiness of the whole thing is weird, but thank goodness for strict building standards. It's a mess, but it's a very first-world-no-deaths kind of disaster.
Right after the big one, after crouching semi-naked in the bathroom doorway of my motel room, I found my touch and then my clothes and abandoned my ground floor room for the relative safety of John's flat, where they turned out to have power, water and internet and were gleefully checking it all out on Geonet. The second night of the 48 hour party happened anyway, and we had the battle on sunday, even though attendance was reduced a bit.
So much contrast, like visiting Washington DC, I'm a bit unsure of what to make of it all For bit of it I was actually having fun. Back in Wellingtron now anyway.
