Well, art criticism and technical esoterica are things of general interest. That is, the reader doesn't have to know anything about me to appreciate my insights on the development of a particular musical technique.
Presumably, my objective in writing about it in a public forum is to have other people read it. But who are these other people? Friends? Family? Not necessarily. More likely, the audience are people with a similar interest in such "long tail" activities.
So what is the best way to reach these people? The answer is clearly Blogger. The blogs are added to the Google index regularly. So the blogs are easier to find on searches. And blog posts will appear in searches when the blog post is about current events.
LJ is really great for communities. I'll not go into the reasons why. If you have a blog here, then you probably already know.
Yes, there are communities on LJ for art criticism and technical esoterica. But nobody on my friends list is a part of them. I don't really see the point of discussing that stuff here. I think my friends list would just skip over it.
The things that my friends list might be interested in (memes, weekend plans, movie reviews) have moved to facebook.
