There is a style in the great American Presidential speeches. I think Lincoln was the rather instrumental in it's development, but maybe he was just sanding on Buchanan's shoulders. The hallmark, in my mind, is the use or epistrophy (repetition of words or phrases). I am talking about style, not content.
G.W. Bush moved to a more colloquial way of speaking, which I like cause it is democratizing and I dislike cause it belays a part of American culture that is really cool. Again, I am talking about style, not content.
Obama's inauguration speech was a swing back to the "old skool" style. This makes me happy, and apparently I am not alone.
