environmental issues

So I had to do some research on Tampa and Florida for a presentation and I realized that Tampa has a lot more to offer than most of us know. I encourage everyone to find out what's happening in their community and get involved. It makes me sad that people don't even know their neighbors.

Drive less. Ride bikes more. Walk more. Interact face to face more with people. (I really need to work on this.)

Also, did you know that each year 152 sq. miles of natural and agricultural land are lost to development in Florida? At this rate there will be nothing left in less than 355 years! That means our great-great-great grandkids will have nothing to call nature!!

In Brandon alone there are 10 McDonald's (that's one per every 10 sq. miles), 11 Walgreens, 9 CVS, 9 Publix, 5 Kash'N'Karrys, 3 Albertsons, 3 Home Depots, and 3 WalMarts. This is just sad. Brandon is not THAT big. Only a little over 100 sq. miles to be exact.

All this development causes major loss of trees to parking lots for strip malls, office parks, and suburban developments.
Trees which normally provide habitats for animals and help improve our air and water quality.

Because everything is built on larger lots, everything is more spread out, therefore we drive more: causing more pollution. Suburbs cause us to waste time in congested traffic due to the need for convient individual transportation.
Please write to your local government and ask them to put more funding towards our public transportation system! (Which really sucks right now.)
