"The mastermind of a "vast international spam network" has been ordered to pay a fine of $15m (£10m) by US courts.
New Zealander Lance Atkinson and his US accomplice Jody Smith sent billions of illegal e-mails marketing prescription drugs and and weight-loss pills.
US authorities claimed the gang - known as Herbal King - "deceptively marketed" the drugs on the internet.
Three companies affiliated with Mr Smith are liable for a further $4m, following the case. "

This is asinine bullshit. This is seen as an electronic only problem. But they have to grasp the fact that every, EVERY, email has a carbon footprint attached to it. The computers that process these emails need more power when they process this crap. More power = more carbon usage. People have to spend time cleaning this crap out, that is manpower (person power if you are PC)
Wear and tear on computers. Computers that process all this shit are working harder, not lasting as long and eventually have to be disposed of.
Not to mention that they used peoples computers against their knowledge by installing 'BOT's that take over your computer and help them deliver this shit.
So where do they think that 5 years and 15 million is enough. These are western world people.
So these people have cost us:
- Time
- Money
- Pollution
- Drain on resources they did not pay for
- Invasion of Privacy
They are a public nuisance, and I for one have had enough. Restrict their access to ANY computer as a punishment. Make them pay for what they have done and make an example to anyone that wants to damage our fragile cyber-ecosystem. How is a lot of this different than some asshole clear cutting a forest and making fliers.
People do not seem to take this cyber-invasion of privacy seriously. We send a guy to prison for 10 years for making a virus that steals banking information from thousands, perhaps millions. He costs the banks millions in damages. He goes to white collar prison for 10 years.
The landscape of crime has changed and not taking people to task for this is causing havoc.
You know what? It's not a victimless crime. There is no such thing. And be it SPAM, viruses, or even so called 'Benign' viruses that alert people to security leaks.
Enough is e-fucking-nough people.
Not to sound tooooooo cruel, but why don't we parade these people out in the public. Make them known so we can look at them and say, "That's what you get." You wanted to be noticed, well you got it now schmuck.
If every mass spammer, virus programmer, and throw Rupert Murdoch in there. If all of these peoples left knee caps suddenly exploded, I would, in the words of Eddie Murphy, 'Giggle my muthafuckin head off.'
