A New Lease On Life

Feb 04, 2010 22:16

So I was watching Squidbillies today and one of the characters said "I have a new lease on life". So this quote has always struck me as an odd saying. After all leases are generally temporary. Not to mention they often times require payment of some kind. That is when I see the irony in the statememt.

Most people only say they have a new lease on life after they have been forced to pay something. Be it a huge medical expense or a diet. New leases on life only come from previous hardship. What is even more ironic is the fact that a lease is temporary.

It is like people know that whatever they are going to do will end eventually, and not end as in mortality. No end as in they will give it up. So really a new lease on life is just a lie. A lie that people tell themselves to make the sacrifice seem worth it.
