Dawn sat in her room trying hard not to cry. The other girls were all off learning to patrol while she was relegated to the house once again. She had tried so hard to fit into her sister's life but now she knew she had no hope of doing so. Hell there were true mini slayers around now, and Dawn, well she was just a used up key with no real power, she wasn't good enough.
"Dawn?"The voice of her sister startled her.
Dawn looked up to see her sister looking sad. "Hey Buff what happened? Are the girls ok?"
Buffy gave her another sad smile. "Oh my sisters are fine, I just wanted to check on you. I mean with you being just human and all fragile and stuff."
Dawn bit her lip. "I'm fine Buffy, but you look exhausted."
Buffy shook her head. "It's worth the lack of sleep to make sure the weak are taken care of. It's the burden of the Slayer, you know to take care of those who are unable to do so and all that."
Tears sprang to Dawn's eyes. She was that burden, Buffy's burden.
Before Dawn could say anything else Buffy got a wistful look on her face. "If there were only the potentials to deal with it would be easier, but you are my responsibility."
With that Buffy turned and left. Dawn sat on her bed for a few more moments before making up her mind. There was no need for her in this house, this town, hell this world. So Dawn decided to make life easier for everyone.
She never noticed that Buffy wasn't wearing the same clothes she had left in, or the fact that Buffy never would have spoken to her like that. All she knew was she was an unwelcomed burden.
She crept into the bathroom and locked the door. Quickly she tore through the medicine cabinet for the razor blades she knew where there. She didn't even think about it as she slid the shiny metal into her wrist.
Four hours later Buffy, Spike, and the rest came back to find the house eerily quiet. Spike smelled the blood instantly.
He screamed her name as he raced up the stairs followed by Buffy and a couple of the potentials. He busted down the door to the bathroom and froze, as did Buffy.
There on the bathroom floor lay the cold body of Dawn Summers in a pool of her own blood. On the wall the words "Never good enough" were scrawled in blood.
Everyone in the house knew then that the First would win, it had killed the key, not the key of Dagon but the key to Buffy's sanity.
Without Buffy they couldn't win and they and the First knew it.
Check mate.
