My rant on Children of Earth
I can't believe more people aren't bitching about Children of Earth!! One of my major problems is that it doesn't make sense! Where is the other Torchwood group? There were four one destroyed, one disappeared, and TWO that were functioning. So why is it that the other Torchwood group didn't come to the aid of the planet? Why wasn't Martha helping Jack? Sure she was on her honeymoon but um the planet is in peril!! When Jack is standing with Ianto in front of the alien he says that one life is too many, the Doctor's philosophy, and yet turns around and sacrifices his own grandchild totally negating what he said earlier!! And if the these aliens were just a bunch of drugged out freaks then why is it that the TIME AGENT didn't contact the Rhino cops?? Remember the Rhino cops from when we first met Martha? Captain John was also on Earth at the time, why didn't he show up and help?
The writing SUCKED! The whole mini series seemed rushed. It was like they only used an outline and didn't bother to flesh it out. I didn't like the end BUT it could have worked if they had spent more time fleshing out the rest of the story.
My biggest problem with the mini series though is this:
The gay couple has one half die and the other totally do a 180 on his philosophy and kills his own grandson. (Earlier he talked of one death being too much) So the gay couple is ripped apart and the survivor is fairly villainized while the Gwen and Rhys, the straight couple, get their happily everafter, even though Gwen has shown she isn't always faithful and doesn't love Rhys with the same passion he loves her. Gwen only had one homosexual experience on the show and it was sparked by alien hormones while all the other members of Torchwood were shown to be bi-sexual, now the only one left is the straight girl, hmmm. This is actually a classic Hollywood formula to show that straight is good and being gay, especially accepting it, is bad. (I'm taking a Sex and Gender in Theatre class and we just went over this formula.)
People were up in arms about the humorous Spangel make out scene in the on-line Buffy comic because they thought it was a cheap shot but no one is complaining about what Torchwood did which was more blatant!?
