Tonight I tried a bottle of North Coast Brewing's
Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. Two words: Awe. Some. Nice and chewy, and dark with a great head. Definite coffee (and a little chocolate?) notes to it, with a pleasant earthy aroma. Also, it's 9%, so it's not a beer that pulls any punches. It's smooth, with just a touch of bitterness to it. Not enough to make me want to cringe, but also just a tad more bite than I'd like in a rich stout like this. With some stouts, by the time I get to the bottom of the pint I'm ready for something to cleanse my palate. But with this, by the time I got to the bottom of the pint, the only thing I was ready for was another pint. And maybe some beer-battered fries. Definitely going to have to try to emulate this one in my brewing endeavors! Rating: 4/5 beers.
In other, non-beer news, I picked up Fantasy Flight's
Wiz-War this evening. Brett and I played a game after dinner, and we both enjoyed it a lot. I lost, but still want to play again. As with any card game, luck of the draw factors heavily in what you can do, and unfortunately I drew next to no attack or counter cards. So, the only choice left to me was to try and collect treasures. I'd nailed my first and dropped it off at my base, and had the second in hand--and the cards to get me safely to home--when Brett's last attack finally finished me off. There are two ways to win, either gain 2 victory points by recovering two enemy treasures and bringing them back to your base, or be the last wizard alive. In a two-player game, this means you just have to kill the other guy, which Brett chose to do with his attack-heavy hand. So close! Maybe things will turn out differently next time.
G'night, LiveJournal!
