Some TWD Predictions

I've been thinking a lot about what is going to happen with Daryl and Beth on The Walking Dead. Naturally, being a show about the zombie apocalypse, there's always the chance that either or both of them might die. And while that's certainly a possibility (hopefully not a probability *tear*) down the road, I believe Beth and Daryl are both safe for now, at least for a little while.

Thinking back on all the deaths in TWD, they all fall into one of three groups:

1. Characters who were never developed
2. Minor characters who were very briefly developed
3. Characters whose development was complete

The first group includes everyone who died in the first season, (except maybe Jenner, he would fit into the second group), Sophia, Otis, Patricia, Jimmy, T-Dog, all of the inmates from the prison, those guys from the bar, Randall, those three people Sasha and Tyresse were travelling with, that random hermit Michonne killed in the shed, the guy with the backpack that they ignored, the governor's henchmen, Zach, Patrick, all the characters who died from the Patrick's attack and the subsequent illness (except maybe the doctor, he's in the second group), the group that the governor was with in the fourth season (except for the little family, they'd be in the second group), all of the people in the prison who died during the governor's attack (except Herschel, who would obviously be in the third group), and that guy Rick killed in "Claimed."

The third group has the smallest number of characters, usually people developed for one episode like Jenner, the doctor, and the family the governor was with in the fourth season.

Characters that belong to the third group would be: Dale, Shane, Lori, Merle, Milton, Andrea, Herschel, the governor, Mika, and Lizzie.

None of the people in the third group were killed in the middle of something really important happening for their character, but only once it was complete. The best example is probably Merle, who only died after he redeemed himself, but the story arc of all of these characters was complete with no loose end left hanging.

That being said, it's obvious that neither Beth or Daryl's development is complete. While both of their characters have been greatly developed, the writers JUST started with the development of their more intimate relationship. The last time we saw Beth, Daryl implied that it was her who changed his view of the world for the better, and her only response to this realization was "Oh." Killing her off now would leave us wondering a lot of things: how does she feel about being that for him, does she realize the depth of his feelings, what exactly does she feel for him. etc. It would leave far too many loose ends and unanswered questions for her to be already dead or to die in the next two episodes.

As for Daryl, based on his actions we can guess what his feelings are, but of course we cannot say anything for sure. It sure looks like Daryl has romantic feelings for Beth, but as of yet there's no indisputable, concrete, official evidence like there is for, say, Glenn and Maggie. On top of that, Beth has already been taken from him, so it's not like killing her would add anything more to the way he is feeling right now. In fact, it is really good news that she was kidnapped, because that is most likely what her comment in "Still" ("You're gonna miss me so bad when I'm gone, Daryl Dixon") was foreshadowing. She is, in fact, gone, and Daryl is, in fact, missing her "so [badly]." If she were to die now, neither his feelings nor their relationship would ever be developed further, and we'd be left forever wondering what exactly his feelings were. Daryl would probably push it down and never let anyone get close again, which would be going backward rather than forward.

Whether the point of pairing up Beth and Daryl post prison attack was to set them up as an eventual romantic couple or to give Daryl hope for the world, killing Beth now would make those two episodes essentially meaningless. Killing Daryl now, in the middle of this important development for his character, would be even more pointless.

If anything, I am much more concerned for a few other character who aren't in the middle of an important character development arc. The characters that I am worried about, in order, are: Glenn, Tyresse, Bob, Sasha, and maybe Maggie. I'd put Carol, but I doubt she is going anywhere because she still needs to be redeemed to Rick and the rest of the group now that Tyresse forgave her, and the events of the past episode leave us wondering what direction her character is going in now, in terms of how she feels about and how she will deal with "what needs to be done" vs. "what's right", etc.

TL;DR: Beth and Daryl are in the middle of a character development arc, and are therefore most likely safe at least until the arc is complete. Characters who just completed a character development arc (Tyresse and Bob especially) are in far more danger of being killed off in the next two episodes.

Of course, I could be wrong. But that would be lousy writing that is, frankly, not in keeping with the pattern of the phenomenal writing that has made The Walking Dead the amazing and super popular show it is today. ^^
