Yesterday, Karyn and I saw
Cirque's du Soleil's: Ovo. We fucking BOOKED IT to Hartford, CT. We had an hour and a half to drive an hour and a half. We parked the car at exactly 8pm. We missed the first 5 minutes, but it was only the opening.
I LOVED THIS SHOW. We had seats off to the side, but could still see pretty upclose. The costumes were awesome. They were shiny or metallic, or awesome colors.. bright and vivid.
The music was pretty good too. The singer, Marie-Claude Marchand.. sounds similar to Zara Tellander and that thrilled me. However, the musicians aren't really incorporated in the show.. they're in the back and off to the side. The singer only came onstage once, and then at the end. Otherwise, she just stood in the back. Her costume and headpiece were awesome though. I wish the music would go back to the Alegria/ Quidam/ Varekai days though.. even Corteo! I miss being able to sing along to these BEAUTIFUL songs.. the music in the shows now are just soundtracks I feel.. can't really sing to them!
I swear, the set gives off a floral scent! At one part, these giant flowers open up and all you can smell is flowers!
I usually hate tight-wire acts, but Li Wei's act was epppic. Doing a chinstand on a unicycle while swinging the rope it's sitting on AND moving the unicycle across.. fuck that. Contortion was as usual, fun and interesting even if I've seen everything contortion has to offer. The trampoline act at the end was really fun to watch.
I can't wait to see the show again when it comes to Boston in July. I have front row seats on July 24th. This was probably my second or third favorite show. Now that years have passed, I would say that I really love Corteo and wish I could watch that again. Kooza was an alright show.
I am worried, however, about these arena shows! Now that Dralion is a show.. how many more years until Quidam becomes an arena show? And then eventually my beloved Varekai? It only began in 2002.. it's not even a decade old yet! And I always thought Varekai was like.. the show that reeeally brought Cirque out into the mainstream a lot more. Should I expect to see Varekai at an arena in the next 3 years? I'd be so sad.. it's like it's dying!
The last time I saw a tent show was the Fall of 2008. Only a year and a half ago.. but the inside of the merchandise tents has changed a lot. Really awesome displays and tables. They have a new, fancy food and booze area (shit I really bought a $14 martini.) The clothes always seem awesome, but I never ended up wearing all the clothes I bought when I was younger haha.
To think, my love for this all started when I was 13 years old in 2002!
REALLY?!! Want. The Icarus is on the other side of the mask
Pretty lights.
