AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
OK Go. And Death Cab for Cutie. AT THE SAME SHOW. LIVE!
It was FANTASTIC! SUPERB! WONDERFUL! AWESOME! AMAZING! SUPER!
And man, was it!! The greatest concert ever was a complete and total success!!! :D
So, Jennifer, Cari, and I got there about a two hours before the show. We only saw five or so people waiting outside, so we went to McDonald's for something to eat. By the time we got back to the theater, there were a heck of a lot more folks there, but it still wasn't too bad. We had about an hour wait before they would let us in to the place the concert was (we were inside the building, just not inside the specific area of the theater). We amused ourselves by contemplating where I should put my purse (it was a bright idea to bring it with me, I know), thinking about what I will do when I see Damian Kulash (future husband #2), planning what to do if Jennifer loses her car keys, and listening to a dude sing a song as he went from the front of the line to the back, then back up to the front again ("Everybody hates meeee 'cause I had to go to the bathroom"). Eventually, they opened the doors.
We ran down the hallway and up two flights of stairs, even though there were two guys there shouting "WALK!!" at us. Seriously, who could walk at a time like this?! THE GREATEST CONCERT EVER IS LESS THAN AN HOUR AWAY!
After we got our places (the concert was being held in a ballroom-thing, so everyone stood)--THIRD-ISH ROW!!!--we waited for what seemed like an eternity. We amused ourselves here by discovering a LASERBEAM OF DESTINY, looking at the clock on the stage, saying "AHH" every five minutes, pointing out when five minutes has passed, still contemplating where to put my purse, and freaking out because of how AWESOMELY CLOSE we were to the stage!
Then it happened. The lights went down and out walks OK Go.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
That's exactly what I said! Just "AHHHHHHHHHH"! Because honestly, what else can be said when you're about to be SERIOUSLY ROCKED from the inside out?!?!
And, of course, my future husband looked dashing. After some mild (mild = major) squealing, I started singing along to the tunes they were playing.
They played, in no particular order: Don't Ask Me, Get Over It, Oh Lately It's So Quiet, It's A Disaster, Invincible, No Sign Of Life, Here It Goes Again, Do What You Want, plus some other songs I'm sure I'm forgetting.
For "Oh Lately It's So Quiet," Damian said something along the lines of, "I know you are all good drug-taking folk and have your lighters, but the age of the lighter is over. So I'm going to ask you all, when we get to the second verse of the next song--I'll let you know when it is--take out your cell phones, PDAs, Palm Pilots, laptops, whatever, and wave them around."
Then they started playing it, and right before the second verse, he stopped playing and whispered into the microphone, "This is the second verse!!!" Hahaha, then everyone took out their cell phones and did just as he said. It was the greatesttt.
Ohh, and at another part, I guess some guy in the audience shouted something that sounded like 'Steve,' so Damian was like "Uh, did you just yell out 'Steve?' There's no one in the band called Steve, dude. Unless you're, like, next generation, then that's rad. We've got Tim *points to Tim*...and Dan *points to Dan*...*points to the guy in the audience* Steve."
He was adorableeeee. My goodness. That man. Eeee!
Anyways, so, they said "This is the last song we'll be playing for you tonight!" and I thought it would be A Million Ways because they hadn't played it yet. And I was super-stoked because I really wanted to see the A Million Ways dance!! Well, instead, they played Do What You Want. I loved the show, but I was really bummed. I was seriously looking forward to the backyard dance.
They finished the song and Damian grabbed the microphone and walked around a little bit. He said, "It's going to take a while for Death Cab for Cutie to set up so we're going to entertain you." Then I see the other band members go around him in the A Million Ways formation. EEEEEE YES. The music started (really really really loud, and Damian made a face and did a really large [really adorable] 'TURN IT DOWN" gesture, hehehehe) and THEY DID THE DANCE, WHOOOOOO!
It was, of course, FLAWLESS, as only my husband (and his bandmates) can pull off. *siiiiiigh* It was wonderfulll.
After some more waiting (we amused ourselves by standing around. I was just tired from all the jumping around and singing I did during the OK Go portion, which, by the way, lasted 45 minutes), the lights went off again and DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE CAME OUT!!!!!! The audience was so loud, holy cow. Which was kind of sad because OK Go didn't get nearly the applause that Death Cab for Cutie did. I mean, I know Death Cab for Cutie was the main act, but OK Go is pretty dang awesome as well.
But at that point, I totally didn't care, so I screamed as loud as I could as they came out singing "405". AHH! ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS! After that, they played "Your Heart Is An Empty Room". AHH! ANOTHER ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS! They played so many songs, I totally couldn't keep track of them all. The ones I remember are (once again, no particular order): Marching Bands of Manhattan, Company Calls, Company Calls Epilogue, A Movie Script Ending, The New Year, Lightness, Soul Meets Body, We Looked Like Giants, 405, Crooked Teeth, Title And Registration, Brothers On A Hotel Bed, Expo '86, I Will Follow You Into The Dark, Transatlanticism, The Sound Of Settling, and many more that I totally can't think of.
When they started playing Company Calls, I was slightly disappointed because Company Calls Epilogue is probably my favorite song by them, and I figured if they played Company Calls, they wouldn't play Epilogue. But then THEY DID! Oh my gosh. I almost cried, seriously. It's such a pretty song. And hearing them play it live...it was unbelievable. All the songs they played were absolutely amazing. For their encore, Benjamin Gibbard played "I Will Follow You Into The Dark", then they played...oh gosh, I can't remember, a couple other songs. They ended with "The Sound Of Settling". A bunch of girls behind us started jumping around and it was kind of annoying at first, but then I thought "So what?" and jumped along with them. Tons of fun!!
They also told a story about how they challenged The Darkness to a guitar-solo-competition-thing, and The Darkness never took them up on it. Well, I guess The Darkness broke up and Ben Gibbard said something like, "I don't want to sound like dick, but I think it's because they were afraid of our mad shredding abilities." Hahaha, it was great.
So, after the concert, I went and waited in line for about half an hour so I could buy two shirts and a CD. It was worth it, though. I bought a red OK Go shirt that says "Oh No" on the back. I also bought a black Death Cab for Cutie tour shirt that had all the dates listed on the back. Anddd I bought The Photo Album by Death Cab for Cutie. Pretty awesome!
Alright, it's about time to wrap up this unnecessarily long blog! In conclusion, the concert was PERFECT! I loved every second of it. I think that my favorite bands should tour together all the time! :D
I hope you folks had a WONDERFUL Thanksgiving break. I also hope you all have a super-fantastic week. Byee!
