Chapter 11 A/N : This is ridiculous, but I've decided to pick this up again after more than a year of not updating anything. You'd probably need to read the previous chapters again to remember what's going on. And I'm so sorry for it :(
Chapter 12
“Donghae-ssi? Are you alright?”
No answer.
“Donghae-ssi?”
Donghae’s eyelids lifted upwards heavily and saw gums and teeth and eyebrows that were brought up together, almost forming a line on the worried face hovering near his. “Where am I?” he asked wearily, senses slowly coming back, like an old engine revving back to life.
“We’re in my dance studio; you wanted me to teach you that new dance, right?” Lee Hyukjae stared at his relatively new student whom he had been giving special lessons to for quite some time now, under the harmless façade of offering free introductory classes for new students.
All he wanted was a bit more of time to see the child-like boy, whom he found out was the same age as he was from the registration form, to his delight. It did strike him as particular when he read form quite full with misused alphabets, but as the other simply smiled shyly and muttered ‘dyslexia’, he realized it didn’t matter at all, making him drawn to the boy even more, somehow. He didn’t think the recent constant blank stares and absent-mindedness within those sad eyes had anything to do with that, because he, of course, knew better.
After all, Eunhyuk himself had an older sister who had the same problem and it didn’t manifest with those symptoms. It only meant that something else was bothering the boy.
“Is there anything I can help you, Donghae-ssi? Why are you unhappy? This isn’t like you. We were dancing so well before this, I was even thinking of entering a dance competition with you next month.” The boy’s head drooped a bit more. Although Donghae was new and still needed more fine-tuning to his skills, Eunhyuk saw potential and more importantly, passion, something that reminded of himself. And there was always this nagging feeling to be near the dyslexic boy, although he should really be focusing on recruiting more students instead of spending so much time on one student. He extended a hand and placed it on the younger boy’s shoulder.
Donghae dropped his head and swallowed. “Don’t touch me; he doesn’t like it.”
Eunhyuk withdrew his hand in surprise as he looked to where the boy’s eyes were trained on towards the door.
“Who?”
“Kibum, my boyfriend.”
Eunhyuk crinkled his brows and swallowed hard, not sure if he had heard correctly.
“But there’s no one there.”

Sometime after Ryeowook’s father’s funeral, a sort of odd quiet buzz lingered at the apartment, a sort of readjustment back to normal yet not quite there yet. A routine was trying to re-establish itself, but it was the first weekend where all four boys were at home and awake around the same time on a cold, quiet Sunday morning.
The maknae was just flipping pancakes skilfully on the pan and plopping them golden-brown and fluffy on Clayton plates, sending a wonderful, fuzzy aroma throughout the kitchen and the rest of the apartment. Siwon was all wrapped up nicely in his bathrobe and reading the morning papers at the dining table, and somehow anticipating the static in the air. A messy-haired Heechul emerged from his studio room, joining them after pouring out some cat pellets groggily for an almost famished Heebum, whom he had forgotten to feed yet again the night before.
“Coffee, hyung?” Siwon offered, raising his expressive eyebrows towards the pot of steaming black liquid. “Do you even need to ask?” The older man rolled his eyes as he plopped down on the chair opposite him. “I’ve been up ‘til four to finish up my illustrations, assignments, research. Fuck it; I’m beginning to regret ever going back to school again.”He lamented, half-lidded eyes flickering to life slightly as he reached out for the mug of coffee.
“Here’s your pancakes, hyung. There’s the maple syrup and cream if you need it,” the smaller-sized boy said, pushing two perfectly-sized pancakes onto the plate in front of him. He was wearing an unfamiliar-looking apron with green, embroidered cartoon turtles swimming around. Heechul eyed it curiously and scoffed, before twirling a fork between his fingers and digging in, pouring a generous amount onto the golden-brown goodies.
“Isn’t that a bit too much?” Siwon peeked from behind his papers non-chalantly.
“I don’t need your opinion on how I should eat my pancakes, thanks, really,” the older man muttered grumpily, bits of maple syrup and pancake lingering at the corner of his mouth.
“Just saying, hyung.” Siwon gave a suave shrug which made Heechul feel even madder.
“How are you coping, Wookie?” It was Siwon who finally spoke of the issue again. “If you need anyone to talk to, I’m here. Why don’t you join me for church tomorrow?” Siwon offered, folding away his newspapers on the table finally. To their surprise, the smaller boy replied in a quiet but steady voice. “I’m fine, Siwonnie. Thanks. I’m going to volunteer at the animal shelter tomorrow,” Ryeowook sat down and joined them at the table.
“With that Yesung guy?” Heechul raised his brows. Siwon chuckled slightly, remembering how he had raced up the apartment stairs with the shorter, frizzy-haired boy previously during the Shin Donghee incident.
“Y-yes, hyung. I’m sorry about how he acted and-.” Ryeowook gulped before looking up.
“Oh, okay. I won’t be worried then.”
He choked with surprise as the other proceeded to munching on his breakfast hungrily. “You’re n-not angry or something?” Ryeowook asked timidly in surprise.
“Pfftt. Now tell me Wookie, why would I want to waste my precious energy being angry at that weird boyfriend of yours? Well, other than the fact that he obviously needs his anger-management in check, I don’t see why I should bother with him at all.” Besides, there’s some truth to what he said, Heechul thought to himself. “Well, of course, if he treats you badly or complains about your food, then that’s a different story.” Heechul added as an afterthought.
“Boyfriend?” Siwon’s eyes nearly bulged out of his sockets, sending Heechul to near-hysterical fits. “Oh come on, Siwonnie. Don’t tell me you’re not suspecting anything at all. Animal shelter? Pffttt, please.” The older man rolled his eyes and as the smaller boy kept his head bowed, cheeks flushing like mad.
“Isn’t it ironic, Siwonnie, that for someone as holy as you, or at least with a holier-than-thou attitude, you’re sharing an apartment with three other men, two out of which happens to be gay? Haha, what am I saying?” Heechul chuckled madly to himself, one hand on his stomach. Then suddenly he realized what he was saying and the image of certain tousled hair boy appeared in his mind and then suddenly he wasn’t laughing that much anymore.
Siwonnie’s face significantly paled by a shade as he appeared to be muttering a prayer under his breath hurriedly. Even Ryeowook gave a small smile at Siwon’s sudden change of expression before putting the dishes into the sink.
“Where’s the other normal and straight one anyway? My brother Fishy-Hae? I haven’t seen him for some time. He’s not awake yet?” Heechul remarked, furrowing his brows while holding his mug of coffee in cupped hands close to his face for warmth.
Ryeowook shrugged his shoulders just as he scrubbed the pan on the way back to its sparkly glory. “He’s not up yet, hyung. He was out late last night, only back around after midnight-“
“-Mornnnning everyone….” A loud yawn followed almost deafeningly.
Everyone in the room turned their heads in surprise to see the said boy with messy hair dragging his feet towards them in long sweat pants and an oversized shirt. “I smell food. Hmm…” Donghae plopped himself somehow dreamily on the chair next to Heechul. It felt like he hadn’t had a good look at his brother for ages. Had he always been this bag of skin and bones?
“Just about time, huh? Care to explain where you’ve been last night? And also all those nights you came back late before?” Heechul questioned with a hint of worry in his voice, now staring at his brother’s face. He never noticed the dark circles under the big puppy eyes before and how tired they looked. Or maybe it’s just the lighting.
“I-uh…was out with my friend. Yeah, was doing something…didn’t realize how late it was…So yeah, Wookie, some coffee please?” Donghae mumbled as he shifted his glance nervously to the maknae to avoid his hyung’s burning gaze.
“Doing what? With what friend? At the dance club with that monkey? Heechul was suddenly sitting straight up in his chair, cat-like eyes trained on the younger boy.
“Just…doing stuff, with another…friend. And no, not at the dance club and please hyung, Eunhyuk is not a monkey. He’s a good person,” Donghae said in a small voice, giving a small nod of appreciation as Ryeowook passed him his share of pancakes.
“It’s hard to say the opposite when he looks like he jumped right out of Animal Planet,” Heechul said with a straight face.
“Really, hyung. Respect, please,” Donghae muttered under his breath.
“What stuff? Is it really so hard to tell? That Minho-ssi from the supermarket told me you’ve been missing work every now and then too. What are you up to recently?” He questioned again, pretending not to hear him.
“And since when do you drink coffee?” Siwon added with a puzzled expression.
“I-I do. People grow up, change, and sorts. I’m allowed to have other friends, no? Maybe I’m not the younger brother you know anymore.” Suddenly all the words were just spewing out of his mouth faster than he realized as he poked at a particular big piece of pancake with his fork, hands shaking visibly.
“Are you dating someone, Donghae? Oh please don’t tell me you’re homosexual too.” Siwon clasped his hands together in worry suddenly, breaking the tension in the air.
Ryeowook cringed as he placed the pan on the dryer. He didn’t think comic relief was of help now, especially not from Siwon who didn’t even mean it as a joke. “Dating? What, Donghae? Why aren’t you telling me anything these days?” Heechul said in a loud voice.
“So what if I am? Stop checking on me like I’m five. I’m not a kid anymore, okay?!” Donghae almost yelled, chucking down the piece of pancake into his mouth, only to have it spat out in the next split second. Suddenly he felt really nauseas, with the urge to puke all of his stomach’s contents. He clasped both hands on his mouth and ran to the bathroom, almost kicking an angry Heebum and leaving the other three in bewilderment.
“Who is she...? Or he?!” Heechul practically screamed his lungs out.
“I’ll go check out on him, hyung!” Ryeowook said hurriedly, almost in a squeak as he tore his apron away and chased after the boy.
Heechul got up and kicked the chair out of his way in frustration. “I wasn’t expecting that. He wasn’t supposed to grow up so fast. Even if he was, he’d never talk back to me like that. Something’s wrong with my brother.”
Siwon shrugged his shoulders. “Well…obviously.”
