“BRILLIANT!”
A clear, flamboyant voice shot through the air and silenced everyone else, leaving a sea of shocked faces in the crowd. A wave of curly black hair bounced past the crowd and to the front. “Life’s too short to make it all mundane like how it has been before Dr Choi arrived at our hospital! Dancing’s a brilliant idea!” Kyuhyun sunk further down in his seat, feeling his temperature drop a little more. Right, he had forgotten that Dr Kim’s also a member of the Yongshin Hospital Association of Idiots. His head feels like it was about to explode.
“Now have you all seen a dancing banana? And a peeled one at that? No? Then what are we waiting for? Let’s have Dr Lee Hyukjae demonstrate some of his hidden dancing skills! Back at where we used to work together Dr Lee was known for his scurvy-infected gums and inhuman dancing skills!” Dr Kim Heechul had most unceremoniously appointed himself as the MC for the event. The crowd began cheering a little, anticipating the ‘dancing peeled banana’ as promised. Kyuhyun noticed how Siwon seemed to have regained a little of his spirit, but turned away quickly to avoid eye contact when the other sought his.
“Dr Kim! I-I can’t dance…not here, not in the hospital!”Dr Lee protested, face turning into a shade of pink but began moving his feet automatically instead as the nurses and Siwon cleared the front area for him. And then he began shuffling like a dancing machine once the upbeat music began playing from the radio that Siwon had brought along with him. The crowd seemed to begin enjoying the dance, cheering as Dr Lee danced and popped his hands in a wave motion efficiently; lab coat flowing along handsomely as his body grooved to the beat. Dr Kim egged the crowd on by clapping to the beat, ushering some of the patients onto the ‘dance floor’, much to Kyuhyun’s utter dismay.
Soon, more than half of the patients joined in on the dance, laughing and cheering as they moved along with the music, despite how much they were so uncoordinated and seemed to have a huge fraction of people who had two left feet. To Kyuhyun, they were exactly like a bunch of drunken fools ought to be locked up in an asylum. Oh wait, that’s exactly what they are too. The chairs around him were practically empty, with Leeteuk up in the front joining in the human circle going round and round. He was just about to slink off to his room quietly and unnoticed in the loud mess when a tap on his shoulder intruded his otherwise brilliant plan (the orderly was even in front, absorbed with the dance and commotion going on).
“Kyuhyun-ssi! Come join us!” Dr Choi Siwon was offering a hand to him enthusiastically; sweat beading his forehead and gleaming.
“You! Have you got nothing else better to do?” Kyuhyun hissed loudly at him. “I just wanted you to have fun, Kyuhyun-ssi. You always seem so uptight and always stuck to your psp. I’m not saying it’s not good, but it’s better to move those joints and limbs once in a while…Come…!” Siwon beckoned with his outstretched arm, a dimpled smile accompanying the notion. He was about to shout a loud ‘No!’ when all eyes suddenly turned to him, all beaming expectedly and cheering him on, repeating his name over and over again.
“Cho Kyuhyun, Cho Kyuhyun, Cho Kyuhyun!”
“We won’t bother you for a week if you come dance with us, Kyuhyun-ssi.” A sly smile struck across Dr Kim Heechul’s face as his voice rang across the room, his slim body slung lazily across one of the plastic chairs as he took snapshots of the crowd on the dance floor. The pretty nurses and Sungmin have joined in as well. Dr Lee was doing a hand stand somewhere in the middle of the crowd and was seemingly basking in the unexpected attention.
Kyuhyun contemplated his options and the much-precious reward as offered by the eccentric doctor who seemed to have a smirk permanently plastered onto his delicate features as he watched the blonde doctor skilfully do a cipher on the ground. All the protests before had dispersed from him and the crowd. A week of peace and quiet…a week of heavenly silence…only him and well, him, since he was stuck anyway. A week without the annoying Choi Siwon dogging his every step (well, almost, whenever he could). It was good as gold. Or not.
Siwon grinned happily when the blonde boy finally slipped a cold hand into his, albeit a little disgruntled and unwilling; something Kyuhyun would regret and mull over again and again later for even considering it as an option. “Thank you for this…” Siwon muttered softly, a bubble of joy rising in his chest unknowingly. “Yah, I’m not doing this for you. Remember, no coming to my room for a week!” Siwon pouted subconsciously but nodded anyway in return.
Kyuhyun wanted to dig a hole in the floor and bury himself there, or perhaps hiding under a chair would suffice. “Just follow my lead…” Before he could protest, Siwon had grabbed both his hands and guided it in rhythmic movements, fluid as the music. He had wanted to wriggle free out of the grip but somehow his hands refused to budge from the strong hands. His face flushed warmly like it was on fire.
He would never let himself forget the humiliation when his body began to move accordingly and awkwardly in strange angles, two index fingers pointing upwards and jigging along instinctively, practically the only dance he knew. Siwon burst into small chuckle and joined in with him in the ‘finger dance’ soon, finally letting go of his hands. It was as nicknamed by Dr Kim loudly as he roared and hollered in high-pitched laughter which felt out of the world. It seemed to be a huge hit with the crowd as many others followed in and cheered him on, which was awkward. And weird. And most importantly, awkward. By the end of the hour he was physically and mentally exhausted, Siwon’s heavy breaths somehow lingering by the side of his ears and pounding in his head, stubbornly not leaving.
“Alright, alright, end of session! End of session!” In the end it was surprisingly Sungmin-ssi who had to get everyone up and back to their regular senses again after the dancing. It was by far the craziest thing he had ever witnessed at the small mental institution. “Jessica, get off that patient right now and get them back to their rooms!”
Dr Kim was still giggling madly as Dr Lee finally straightened his lab coat in embarrassment, after performing ten hand stands in a row. His red and sweaty face looked like he had no idea of what he had been doing for the past hour, strips of blonde hair matted at the front.
“You know you’ll need to write me a report on this, Hyukjae.”
“Y-you approved it! You just did.” Hyukjae brushed his sweat away on the forehead hastily and straightened his tie in effort.
“Well, Siwon-ssi ‘s under your care, so whatever crazy decisions he makes is your responsibility. I did say that it was brilliant,” Heechul’s voice drops into a low whisper as he passes Hyukjae on the way out.”…but it doesn’t mean I agree with it.”
“Fine, I’ll just write you a report on this. What font do you want this time? Blackadder again? Size 11?” Hyukjae shook his head subtly to Siwon who looked on guiltily at him.
“Oh, you’ll have plenty to write about later. Come to my office, if you may, Dr Lee Hyukjae.” Heechul licked his lips with a smirk as he beckoned the blonde man to follow him out of the room. “What do you want with me?” Hyukjae asked apprehensively, startled by the demand. “You’ll know when we get there. Like you said, reports and stuffs like that.” A devious grin slowly formed on the curly-haired man’s face, sending the blonde doctor spiralling into worry.
“And no, how did you even expect me to read it the last time? You gave me a horrible headache after that, you idiot.”
“You said you wanted ‘flowery’.” Hyukjae said bluntly.
“And I said I wanted ‘brains’ when I asked for a new junior attending the last time.” Heechul scoffed as a matter-of-factly, to which Hyukjae failed to retaliate somehow.
“You’re daring, Siwon-ssi. “Dr Kim paused as he strolled to where Siwon was sitting with a disgruntled Kyuhyun who was nursing a bruised ankle. “Disregarding the traditions of this hospital and organizing such crazy activities here. But still, I guess you did a good job today. And oh, Kyuhyun-ssi. Great dance you’ve got there. I’ve caught it all on my Iphone.” Heechul grinned as he tapped his breast pocket lightly, to which Kyuhyun had wanted to launch at him and smash that phone to bits but was held back by Siwon.
“And oh, you’ll have to thank me, Siwon-ssi. I got your baby out of his shell.” Heechul’s eyes averted and glinted mischievously towards Kyuhyun who was cursing under his breath as he massaged his ankle. Siwon just bowed and hid a smile as Heechul strode past them and out of the room, followed closely behind by a still-embarrassed Dr Lee, who shook his head again at Siwon.
“Had fun?” Siwon’s cheeks were pink and rosy and sweaty and a whole lot of other things that felt strange and foreign yet amusing to Kyuhyun at that adrenaline-intoxicated moment. “My ankle hurts. And my image is ruined. I don’t think that’s equal to fun at all.”
“Come, I’ll help you back to your room…” Siwon offered as he slung the boy’scrawny hand over his shoulder in a swift motion. “I don’t remember saying I needed help?” Kyuhyun retorted and struggled slightly as he fell helplessly against the man’s body but to no avail.
“You don’t really have a choice, I guess.” Siwon grinned happily as they hobbled together to the now empty corridor, everyone else had returned safely to their rooms after such a tiring event. “I won’t be seeing you for another week, so it’s okay. I’ve got something to celebrate on my own.” Kyuhyun remarked in return as he hopped on one leg awkwardly. Siwon’s heart sunk in disappointment.
“Kyuhyunnie, what happened to your leg?” A concerned voice popped out from his left side suddenly just as the two of them were about to reach room 17. “Nothing much, it’s just that my ankle decided that it doesn’t want to live anymore in this insanity and is surprised that the rest of the body still hasn’t left yet, so it’s just his way of saying he can’t take it anymore and has to go without even saying goodbye.”
“Wow, that’s a long story.” Siwon remarked to himself quietly to which earned him a sharp nudge in the rib from the younger boy. “But why?” Leeteuk asked seriously.
“Nothing. Just nothing. What is it now?” Kyuhyun said after shaking his head gently as Siwon led him to the side of the wall where he leaned against for support, watching subtly as the other opened the door to his room and switched on the lights.
Leeteuk was clasping and unclasping his fingers somehow restlessly, apple-stick hair bobbing up and down a little too distractingly. “Kyuhyun-ah, my crayons are yours after this, okay? Put them nicely after you’ve used them and don’t mix the colours when you colour, especially the white. It gets coloured easily if you run it over other colours.” Kyuhyun sighed resignedly and wished Siwon would hurry up with the pointless inspection of his room. “Go to sleep, Leeteuk. We’ve had a long day. I know you’re leaving tomorrow, so goodbye, okay?” He waved his hands mindlessly at the man.
“I like white and yellow. I think white and yellow’s really pretty. So innocent. I don’t like red.”Leeteuk noted in a soft whisper. Kyuhyun shook his head yet again, wishing he wouldn’t need to listen to anymore of this. “Okay, okay. I got it, Leeteuk. And I really feel the need to know that fact about you-“
“Thank you for the other day,” Leeteuk cut his sentence short and smiled, pressing a box of crayons into Kyuhyun’s hands with his scar-riddled ones. “I think I know what to do with myself now.” Kyuhyun thought he heard the man mumble something along those lines as he walked away without another word, leaving him looking confusedly at his retreating back.
“I just wanted to check that everything’s alright in your room for you for the rest of the week, since I can’t go in there after this. I asked the nurse to change that flat pillow for you.”
Kyuhyun took a little longer than normal to take in what Siwon had just said as he hobbled inside his room with the taller man’s help reluctantly. “Are you even a real doctor? You won’t come in just because of that stupid deal Dr Kim made just now? Aren’t I your patient?” he asked incredulously as the other helped him onto his bed.
Siwon looked at him, slightly taken aback and looked like he was actually thinking about it. “Well, I respect you,” he finally said, looking as if it was the most reasonable answer he could come up with.
“Ah.”
“Ah?” Siwon cocked his head curiously. Kyuhyun blinked and shook his head slowly, one hand reaching forward to his feet.”What is it? Is your ankle bothering you?” Siwon reached towards the boy’s ankle but was stopped.
“Who told you I wanted a new pillow? I like this one.” He grabbed for the rather flattened pillow and hugged it while lying down, sleepiness dawning on his eyes slowly.
“Sorry, I’ll tell them not to change it then.” Silence ticked by.
“So does it mean I can come back again later?" A voice asked hopefully after a while. He could feel a pair of eyes peering down at him as he began to curl comfortably on the bed.
“Go,” he muttered after a disgruntled nod, squeezing his eyes a little tighter.
He could almost feel the grin that Siwon had burst into burning onto his back as the other mumbled a soft ‘thank you, goodnight’ (perhaps even a 90 degrees bow) and switched off the lights, closing the door as gently as possible as he left.
Kyuhyun tossed and turned to the other side as he squeezed his eyes a little more in the dark, a mixture of feelings riding in his chest as his muscles and brain screamed for him to take a rest. The whole day had been nothing short of real crazy. Words and words rang in his head as he thought they did in his sleep that night, circling round and round like swirls in a whirl pool, threatening to suck him deep into it.
Siwon, dancing, Dr Kim and Dr Lee, lunatics, Siwon, his secretly favourite flat pillow, idiocy, Siwon, bright lights, darkness, crayons, white, yellow, white, apple-stick hair, white, innocence, red, Leeteuk.
He bolted up straight in his bed with sweat beading his forehead as moonlight streamed in through the glass window just next to his bed. Suddenly Kyuhyun didn’t feel like sleeping anymore.
