Chapter 4

“You’re here!”

The man with dimples as deep as the crates on the moon (an exaggeration, but still) and sporting an apple-stick hairstyle waved as Kyuhyun shuffled disgruntledly towards one of the round tables in the common room, being held by the arm roughly by an orderly.

“Stop, stop, Sir, you’re hurting Kyuhyunnie!” The man named Leeteuk flapped his hands around, getting up from his chair with fingers still curled around a crayon. Kyuhyun wrung his arm free from the fierce-looking and rather muscular man, falling flat on his bottom on the hard surface of the plastic chair. He hid his head with his hands in embarrassment as the man beside him puffed up his cheeks like a blowfish; narrowed gaze trained on the orderly as the man left, as if trying to size up the orderly who was about thrice his skinny size. Kyuhyun expected a building filled with crazy and depressed people, yes, but not someone nearing his thirties acting like a five-year-old.

“Yes, Leeteuk. It’s me again. Boohoo.” Kyuhyun said boredly as he turned his head away to face the front, massaging his arm subtly where the orderly squeezed him a bit too hard. The common room, filled with about fifteen or so other patients, buzzed with a multitude of noise and voices as they waited for the weekly group session to begin. Kyuhyun never wanted to be part of one to begin with, but even after protesting and trying to bribe the orderlies he was still forced into one. No one bothered with him when he demanded to see Dr Kim Heechul, who seemed to have a higher authority around the place. He hated being treated like some scrawny kid at school; well, only because he used to be that scrawny kid at school.

Kyuhyun He had only seen and interacted with the man (well, Leeteuk was doing most of the talking anyway) about twice when they had sessions like this, in which he was assigned to the timid and childish man as an activity partner.

“You’re mean again. You were nicer the other day…” Leeteuk said with a sigh, turning to the front as well. “I want to talk to Kyuhyun…”

“Aish, I am Kyuhyun! Act your age, you bozo.”

“But Bozo’s a clown. I’m not a clown, I don’t even like clowns. Not even remotely…” Leeteuk looked like he was having a hard time deciphering his own thoughts.

Silence ensued just as a multitude of hushing sounds filled the air, but a few more whispers lingered in the air as Kyuhyun tried to shake off Leeteuk who was practically clinging onto him. “What is wrong with you!” he said in a low voice, scrunching up his face in annoyance. The night before had not been a good one; he distinctly remembered retiring to bed right with a migraine after he failed to beat his own high score for the fifth time, which ought to be quite early. The neat book-pyramid on his side table and mess of scrunched up paper balls on the floor was a sure indication that sleeping had not been the only thing he was doing last night. Leeteuk swallowed and pouted, Kyuhyun noticed how his fist was clenched so tightly around the crayon that half of it was slipping out of his grip.

“Hello, everyone… I hope that all of you had a good night’s sleep last night.” Kyuhyun stifled a yawn with effort as the short male nurse with bright auburn hair began rambling something, standing in front of the small assembly of restlessness. Kyuhyun’s brain pounded like it was trying to bang its way out of its imprisonment that was his skull.

“It’s time for our weekly group session again!” A chorus of groans filled the air; to which Kyuhyun can’t help but add in a most disinterested low-pitched ‘boo’ to the vocal protests. Leeteuk, however, was grinning almost ear-to-ear and banging both his fists on the table, barely able to contain his excitement. Kyuhyun rolled his eyes in annoyance.

Sungmin held a finger to his lips to shush the crowd with a stern look that reminded Kyuhyun of a cute but feisty lead female character in a local sitcom. He shook his pounding head mentally. “Settle down, settle down, now don’t we all hate this? Yes, but rules are rules, and humans are social beings, no matter how much we despise it. You would need to know how to blend in with the society again once you get out of here. And we all want to get out of here for sure, no?” He cocked his head at the rhetorical question as a low buzz of voices ensued.

“Are we going to do boring stuff again? If yes, then I’m going back to sleep.” A man in his fifties from the next table said while waving his hand around boredly. “That depends on how you define ‘boring’. Today’s session is going to be a little bit special, since it’s our Leeteuk-ssi’s last group session here with here as well. Let’s all wish him a very happy goodbye and let’s hope to never see him in here again.” Kyuhyun joined in the clapping unenthusiastically but was taken aback when Leeteuk’s face turned into a violent shade of pink despite the small smile and nods to around the room.

“What’s wrong? Aren’t you happy to get out of here?” Kyuhyun asked in a whisper as he frowned at the man who casted a look downwards sadly, mumbling something that sounded incoherent to him. The man didn’t give him any more response.

“Anyway, let’s give a hand of applause to Dr Choi Siwon! He’s going to take over today’s group session. Go on, Siwon-ssi.” Sungmin stepped aside with a bright smile to reveal Siwon who was standing behind him, which Kyuhyun thought was totally unnecessary given that Siwon was at least a head taller than the male nurse.

That Choi Siwon again.

Of all medical staff, they couldn’t have let some other person take charge? Kyuhyun sighed in frustration. The frequent visits by the young doctor was painstakingly annoying yet Kyuhyun found himself fidgeting oddly when the tall man didn’t come to his room as per routine. But most of the time he would pretend to be more interested in his PSP or sleeping while the other rambled on and on about religion and how beautiful the world was, making lame jokes that Kyuhyun didn’t even find remotely funny and even giving him a bible; now sitting atop the stack of other books and collecting dust like the others.

Kyuhyun really had the urge to stand up and just leave for his room. He looked at the back of the room which led to the corridor to his room and turned back almost immediately, gritting his teeth; the ruthless orderly just now had just shot him a threatening look. All those running he had did before should help him escape, yet he knew he should just stay put. Given the puckered look on the sturdy man’s face, he wouldn’t even make it pass the entrance.

“Well, good morning everyone, I’m Dr Choi Siwon, your resident doctor here. Erm, so, for today’s group session, we’re going to do something really fun.” Kyuhyun twitched his mouth and shot the man a mock look of disapproval when Siwon looked wide-eyed at him expectantly for a brief moment of eye contact. “We’re going to err…dance.”

“WHAT?”

Kyuhyun’s sudden outcry shocked everyone else almost as much as the blasphemy that came out of the tall, handsome but sadly empty-headed doctor’s mouth. He looked around the room as everyone stared at him bewilderedly, as if he was the only mad man there. He supposed the rest of them were too shocked as well, but only too shocked to channel it into something audible like he still had the sense to do. The aftermath of response only came a second later than his outburst, rolling in louder waves of groans and outraged objections. “Oh my god, our doctor has lost his head. He wants us to lose ours too, oh no, oh no…”

Kyuhyun looked over at Sungmin in disbelief who was seated by the side for any help he can get to get out of this, but the other seemed more interested in checking out his flaming-orange hair in the mirror. The younger pretty nurses and orderlies busied themselves with calming the crowd down. Kyuhyun could tolerate the ramblings, the need to uphold morals, the lame gags, the cute, blushing face when he did something embarrassing, but dance? No, Dr Choi Siwon has touched a nerve. The man had obviously not been listening when Kyuhyun deliberately said to stay out of his business and make his stay here peaceful and quiet in exchange for the daily visits (even after office hours) the doctor had pleaded to be allowed.

“Yes, dance. Let’s all do a little something different from the usual boring things, right? It’s good for you to practise your coordination and concentration. I’m sure many of you here have some pretty good dance moves hidden within you, right?” Siwon said hopefully, swinging his hands in futile attempt to make it appear to look like dancing.

A chorus of simultaneous negative replies and shaking heads filled the air. Leeteuk seemed to be the only person in the crowd who seemed genuinely intrigued by the idea of dancing in the middle of a mental hospital.

Kyuhyun shook his head in embarrassment when the man’s expressive eyebrows rose in apprehension and fluster. He spotted the nurses whispering into each others’ ears while shaking their heads in disapproval. “I told you he’s a little loose up there despite the handsome face. I don’t know why Sungmin-ssi agreed to this…”  Siwon swallows in effort to toughen himself up despite the cold response. Kyuhyun hopes it doesn’t work.

“I will not dance if that’s the last thing I’ll ever do!” An old man rose and spat while shaking his fists frailly, joined in by another series of complaints. Kyuhyun was about to take a run for it when suddenly a blonde head popped into the room. “Everyone, what’s the commotion here about? I think I heard you from the third floor.”

“Dr Lee! This mad doctor wants to make us dance! But how could we? We’re crazy but not that crazy!”

“You’re the crazy one here, okay? Don’t drag everyone else down with you!”

“Why you-!”

“It’s just dancing, we won’t die from dancing!” Leeteuk was shouting but only Kyuhyun could hear him amidst the dangerous noise level. And that was when he noticed the disappointment plastered on the young doctor’s face. A strange pang in his heart melted him but like electricity something else jolted him awake.

Dr Lee didn’t seem to approve of the idea very much as well, face scrunching up in hesitance. “D-dancing? Ah, Siwon-ssi…Did you plan something else? Dancing’s a little too-“

“BRILLIANT!”

A clear, flamboyant voice shot through the air and silenced everyone else, leaving a sea of shocked faces in the crowd.
