Grammar Nazi Friday!

Aug 17, 2007 09:31

It's 2 words. "come on".

Not "common" (which is its own word with a COMPLETELY different meaning). Not "cummon". Not "comon".

You can contract it: "C'mon". That's acceptable.

Come on.

See?

I'll do it again, in a sentence.

"Come on, let's go to the store!"

Thank you. You may now return to normal LJ Friday.

Heh, kinda funny - one of my other LJ friends was just complaining about grammar ... um ... enthusiasts. Her point of frustration stemmed from those who would distract from an otherwise cogent argument by choosing to focus on a more ... casual capitalization methodology and unorthodox grammar.

To wit:
what i hate about the internet (and livejournal in particular) is every person's sudden need to start a fight over every little goddam thing. i replied to someone's post about whether or not a rewards-type system was the most effective form of discipline for children, saying that i disagreed with the idea. well, as is wont to happen, someone disagreed with me (which was fine) but instead of formulating a worthwhile arguement they attacked capitalization and grammar ( ... )

Oh, I agree... if you're going to pick apart someone's argument, leave grammar/spelling out of it, as it's definitely petty.

That said, though... I tend to take someone less seriously if their argument is riddled with bad spelling and atrocious grammar.

Yes, I've been told this makes me a bit of an asshole. :p

I... also like to... use dotty things.... I don't know why. ;)

Heh, IAWTC. It's difficult for me to take someone seriously if they don't take the time and effort to conform to some sort of standard regarding grammar. And yes, I abuse the ... what do you call it ... ellipsis a great deal too. ^_^

I agree. If you don't even have the brain power to write correctly (in the case of important stuff; if it's a text or something, I don't really care), why should I believe you have anything worth saying? Yeah, sometimes depending on mood or use, stylistic or lack of grammar/punctuation can be amusing or effective. But most of the time it just makes me hate people.

Granted, I'm far from perfect about it, but I especially can't stand work emails where the people write so unprofessionally. Drives me up the wall!

This is the kind of shit I can't stand:

"hey gurl ur my bestest frnd! i luv talkin to u!lol when ur on! and u actually talk! LOL which is like always! well ur my frnd and thats just dandy! i luv u like a sis and i always will!"

(above quotation found after googling "u r so kewl")

I immediately think immature, petty, materialistic, teenager. It's to the point that if someone wrote like that to me, I wouldn't bother with any kind of response. Imagine someone walking up to you and actually "speaking" like that. BAH!
