title: whatevs man, this doesn’t really deserve a title
pairing: itachi/sakura
summary: sleep and security were privileges-privileges that he obviously didn’t have. so until he got that, she’d stay with him, even in the darkest of moments.
notes: this is a piece of yuck, maybe you shouldn’t read it. (inspired by grey’s, hell yeah.)
Sakura had no proof, but she had a hunch that Itachi used to smile a lot.
And as she lay there, watching him sleep, it wasn’t hard to imagine that. In slumber, even the deadliest of criminals looked peaceful. And it was nightfall that she loved best, the darkness that she found most comfort in-because here, he was just Itachi, she was just Sakura, and when it was like that, she could just breathe.
She didn’t realize that she had reached out to touch his face until cold fingers wrapped around her wrist, their hold tight enough to snap her bones the way a child could a toothpick. The crimson eyes that should’ve frightened her, didn’t-it was hard to be scared of anything anymore.
“It’s just me,” she whispered. It was several long and tense seconds before the grip around her wrist loosened. Her hand came to rest on his cheek, her thumb idly stroking right underneath his eye.
“You’re scared of me.” It wasn’t a question.
And as she looked at him curiously, she wondered how much more beautiful he could look. He would be heartbreakingly breathtaking if he smiled. “Only sometimes.”
He said nothing, but it wasn’t long before he closed his eyes again. A small smile met her lips, and she wondered how many years he spent like this, paranoid even in sleep, afraid to drift off because he might not wake again. It hurt sometimes, to think that after everything they’d been through, he still didn’t trust her completely. But she should know better than anyone that these things were gradual.
“I’m getting better though,” she said quietly, not sure if he could hear her. She shifted closer to him-close enough to feel his breath on her hair, to feel the warmth radiate from his neck. “Are you?”
It was a moment before he responded. “Only sometimes.”
