Illegal Downloads

I stopped by my local game shop today and four of my friends either had their laptops out or were using the store computer to look at the upcoming Dungeon and Dragons 4.0 players handbook. Its due out sometime this week and like most releases it has already been leaked on the internet. They were busy crafting their characters for an upcoming game and I asked them the question,

"How many of yall plan on actually buying the book when it comes out...since you have it already in PDF"

I think everyone of them said they would do to the fact that it is easier to flip through something physical in your hands rather than calling it up on a computer. I then mention the fact that I'm not a big fan of downloading pirated material, there's a lot of work and effort put into these projects (that being the DnD 4.0 book) and I know that if i personaly worked on the book I would be rather pissed that people are just downloading it rather than purchasing it.

This is when a guy at the shop Eric said, he would download it just to spite me. I asked him how he would feel if he had his hand in creating a product only to be tossed around the internet without gaining any sort of profit from your product. He then said that the book will be available to purchase for download on the site and it is basically the same thing as downloading it. He then said something along the lines of him beinging a future business owner that downloading and shoping online is one in the same...

I had to leave at this point..I felt there wasn't any point in trying to say that for him as a business owner there is a huge difference between getting it for free than for paying for it. I understand what he means about people ordering the product online, but also if he was to keep his stock in supply he wouldn't have people turing around and shopping on the internet, or be tempted to download it illegaly....Plus with him beinging a future business owner he shouldn't be condoning the act of piracy...its bad for business, internet shoping and local.

...k..enough of that...heh
