If you throw an object straight up, it will rise until the the negative acceleration of gravity stops it, then returns it to Earth. Gravity's force diminishes as distance from the center of the Earth increases, however. But a fatalist (which I aren't) might argue that the ultimate ends of escape velocity, in cosmological terms, only means the heat death of the universe. All matter and energy dissolving into the dead void.
