I finished watching Xam'd. All the while through I was judging this series as "high" tier, one step down from my top tier. But I was so moved by the ending I want to rate it higher.
Xam'd is very similar to Eureka Seven, one of my five top tier anime series (yes, I actually keep a list). Like E7, Xam'd has heart, characters that are believable and multi-faceted, numerous character-to-character conflicts, good production values, and action fresh enough to keep you guessing. As for downsides, the soundtrack is quite forgettable (excluding the OP and ED), some of the plot threads could have used a little more time, and there are too many cryptic buzzwords and confusing otherworldly phenomena (think Trapars, Coralians, The Limit of Questions... but worse).
In summation: Xam'd is excellent. While it's not as good as E7 it's the closest thing I've seen to E7, and that's saying a lot. I'm curious how it holds up on a second viewing. I think it would improve.
Also Bones taught me that shoulder-length unkempt hair = WISDOM
PS, regarding sub weirdness: The two torrents available at the moment and done by the groups "GGR" and "Fabulous." They're the same damn subs. They're probably the same group. So while Fabulous goes only halfway, download those since the videos are of a higher quality. After that, there is no choice but GGR.
