After volunteering at freshman orientation today (ohmygoshthey'resosmallwasieverthatimmaturecannyoubelievewe'refinallyseniorsi'llmisseveryonesomuchbarryisacompleteidiotthankgodforyouguysineverwould'vesurvivedfreshmanyear), we took my friend out for his Sweet 16 birthday lunch.
Margaret: "Did you ever think that this is the last first day we'll ever have? I mean, after this year, nothing will ever be the same. And for the last twelve years of our lives, we've been preparing for this. We've been waiting for so long, and now it's here. And soon it'll be gone."
Silence. We ponder.
Jess: "Hey, you know what's really weird? When people are pregnant, and they have outie belly buttons. It's like two bulges, one on top of another. What's up with that?"
She has that uncanny ability to ruin a perfectly serious moment, and I have to love her for it.
Don't take yourself so seriously. We're young and curious and stupid, and we might as well enjoy it.
Live, because if you're not busy being born, you're busy dying.
