Damn, I can't think of a way to word it differently. *spreads pasta all upons* zelda_hylia December 19 2011, 01:33:02 UTC
It is not too different where I am from. People get together with those closest to them and speak of the year that has passed, usually over a dinner. At midnight, we light a candle and pray for our hopes for the new year. There are gifts given, but only to those you want to thank for their care during the year that has passed. It is not so obligatory as Christmas gifts seem to be.

[ There is a pause as he considers this. ]

Perhaps not as obligatory though I don't remember where the practice came from. It does sound a bit like Christmas in that wording.

Quite interesting that different worlds share a common practice around this time.

If I had to guess, I would say it is because winter is a very gloomy season. People tend to get depressed rather easily in such conditions, and a holiday with so much preparation and ceremony about it does wonders to distract them.

[ This... this is quite a possible theory. Ancient customs and all that, little possibilities of power. ]

Or there are those who do consider winter being the end of the year. Perhaps it was only right to bring family and friends together before then?

Oh yes, the celebration back where I am from is also for that reason. In the end, it doesn't seem to matter much what race someone is or the planet they are from... they are still people. It's actually quite fascinating!
