I'm in Sacramento for the week. This town is basically a large version of Des Moines. AKA, it sucks ass for the most part.
Training is going well, but it's mindnumbing as crap. You try learning PIX firewall command intricacies without falling asleep!
My cousin Steve has been sick for a while. Very sick. First they diagnosed him w/ progressive MS, then liver cancer. Well, the Chemo managed to get rid of the cancer, but left him so weak that he's been in a pretty nasty loop of in/out of the hospital.
Trach tubes, feeding tubes, wheel chairs, walkers, canes, pneumonia...
My parents went up to see him last week on their Anniversary. They said he was keeping his spirits up as best he could, and still had his sense of humor.
Well, this morning they were debating about whether he should go back to the hospital today because he could no longer walk on his own at all. With or without a walker. He didn't want to go unless the Dr. had a clear plan of what they would try to make him better.
It never got that far. He died today after a having a seizure.
I'm sad that I won't get to see him again, and even sadder that I won't make the funeral. The worst part though is that I'm actually relieved that he's dead, because now everyone can grieve and get on with their lives rather than just sit on hold. Of course his wife and two sons might think differently than I do.
In the end, I'm all alone in a hotel room hundreds of miles from 'home' of any sort and this really sucks.
My life seems to have such great timing for these things.
