good records of 2009.
gallows - grey britian - saw them live at warped tour. insanity. it's basically what you want in a punk band. fights. british. saying fuck only the way brits can.
mastodon - crack the skye - basically everyone singing. moog taurus. awesome riffs stacked upon awesome riffs. so good. this has been in my car since i bought it.
matt and kim - grand - yeah yeah. i know. but seriously some of these songs are the catchiest songs on earth. simple instrumentation and vocal lines. now it's on car commercials and everywhere.
sunn 0)) - monoliths and dimensions - most realized sunn record. from what i've heard. and reading all the articles and interviews. they seemed most content with this release. got all their creative juices out.
converge - axe to fail - i've been a perpetual fan. kurt ballou at god city. the amount of shit talked about this record before it came out was amazing. then it dropped. and people fucking ate it up. so good. so insanely heavy and recorded crazily.
tim hecker - an imaginary country - everyone shit their pants over harmony in ultraviolet. best of lists. the whole nine yards. now this comes out. totally slept on. it's a progression. it's fucking good. between the two, i actually think this is a better record.
pelican - ephemeral ep - i can't say the full length is good yet. haven't chewed on it for too long. the ep though is fucking good. i bought it just to buy it. support the dudes. i hated city of echoes, well pretty much everything after australasia. i'm one of those. but this was good. i could have done without the earth cover, but what are you going to do?
jonsi and alex - riceboy sleeps - it's like sigur ros. it sounds like sigur ros. but it's not. the compositions are even more airy. the vocals kill me everytime. this hasn't left my cd player and i got the vinyl too. shit is good. the swirly tones and reverbs. mmm mmm good
alexisonfire - old crows/young cardinals - again. i went to warped tour. i saw a bunch of bands. i wrote some down that i wanted to check out. this album is a great mix of the singing/screaming aesthetic. it's great work out music. and also for secret car sing alongs. the northern stands out as a good track for me. plus stu does sound for them.
tortoise - beacons of ancestorship - i'm beginning to believe i'm somewhat of a regionalist. i like this album a lot. i'm not a huge tortoise fan, but this scratches some itch that i was unclear i had. it's got sweet synth sounds. great guitar and bass. sweet beats. can't complain.
fall of efrafa - inle - this band was great. i was in it enough to have the forethought to go to their last chicago show but for some reason didn't. band is done. this record is phenomenal. all their records are now free in mp3 on
http://www.fallofefrafa.com/music.html jesu - opiate sun - i like jesu a lot. he's been pooping out releases since conqueror. nothing can top it but opiate sun is tiding me over. hopefully he tours again. i'd like another go.
russian circles - geneva - i'm biased. i heard these riffs for the past year at home. i talk to them about shitting. they sleep at my house. they named a song after me. but standing away from all that, this record slays. i feel weird really liking a friend's band plus station was a clunker. but this record is rounded out. sounds great and just does it for me. great drumming. great tone. great bass and guitar parts. shit rules. i'm proud of them.
