it's 2009. i started what i knew i wanted to do for a long time, but the ease of use finally caught up with my idea. i'm keeping a spreadsheet of all the shows/events i go to in 2009. this is basically anything i leave the house for. ie to see bands play, dj bar nights, plays, movies, whatever. it's all dated and includes the addresses so at the end of the year i can graph where i spent most of my time and what bands or whatever i was really into or found anew.
i've already had three entries. going to see neil labute speak at profiles on the 3rd. chandeliers on the 6th. playing on the 8th at whistler. not a bad start to the year.
this also brings me to what i guess you could call a resolution. i'm going to go see more music outside of what i've been into for the last decade or two. i've done it enough, the symphony here, random jazz night there, musical on accident. but i'm wishing to seek it out more. and i'm sort of putting it onto other people too. if you like doom metal, go see an ambient techno night. post rock, go check out the symphony. it's all relative and lots of these people have been doing this way longer than we have.
if anyone has any suggestions, i'm open to them. i'll drive too. i'm going to bill frisell in april. i know i might not love it but i'll be ruined by how good he is and his choice of effects and how to tastefully use them.
i saw a performance of steve reich's music for 18 musicians(
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_for_18_Musicians) a few years ago and was completely destroyed during and afterwards. when is the last time that happened at a regular show? not in a long, long time for me.
there is a lot in the works this year too. i'm pressuring lots of people to do basement shows via either playing at my house or throwing some at theirs. one offs. crazy shit. trying new things. we're going into an economic spiral down. let's enjoy our last breath of society/culture and digest it and shit out our own blend.
downloaded the new caspian(
