“How long have we’ve been partners, Myka? A few months, right?”
Myka looked up from her paperwork, and at Pete before shrugging. “Give or take. Why?” she asked.
“How come I don’t know your ferret’s name?”
She blinked at that and shuffled the papers around. “His name is Ferret,” Myka answered.
“No. Whenever I call him Ferret, he doesn’t come to me,” Pete said as he pointed his finger at Myka. “I think you’re embarrassed by what you named him, and think I’m gonna make fun of you.”
More papers were shuffled. “What makes you say that?” Myka said, her eyes diverted away from Pete’s.
“Bet you named him after an old flame or secret crush.”
“Pete...his name is Ferret.”
“No,” Pete said. He scratched his chin in thought before grinning. “You named him after Artie or Dickinson, didn’t you?”
“What? No!” Myka gave him an annoyed look. “Don’t you have anything better to do.”
“Nope. I’m done with all my work,” Pete said. He plopped down beside her and furrowed his brow in thought. “Can’t be Leena since the ferret is a boy...”
“Pete. You’re thisclose to getting your ass kicked,” Myka warned.
“Pete. You named him Pete!” It was obvious Pete was only suggesting the name to get at her, but when he saw the blush rise over her cheeks, he grinned and nearly bounced out of his chair. “Oh my God! You named your ferret after me!”
“No, I didn’t,” Myka meekly said. She shoved all the papers in a folder and closedit.
Pete’s grin remained in place and he placed his hands over his heart. “I’m touched, Myka. I really am,” he said.
“The only thing that’s going to touch you is my fist,” she said. She stood from the chair and gathered her papers and book up. “I’m going somewhere quiet.”
Pete crossed his arms over his chest and grinned as Myka walked off to the opposite side of the office. He grinned and tipped his chair back, before letting out a small chuckle.
“She so likes me.”
