When she was younger, Willow was scared of the wicked witch. Whenever the Wizard of Oz would come on, and she would see the witch’s green face, and hear her crackling laugh, Willow would run from the living room and hide. She would find her trusty nightlight, the one her parents didn’t know she still had, and plug it in so she wouldn’t have to sleep in the dark.

As she grew up, Willow realized the witch wasn’t real and eventually forgot about her. The only time she ever thought of her childhood fear was the few times Amy and her would joke about it during spell casting.

Yet, as she walked through the corridor of the coven, Willow can’t help but to remember, especially when she saw the look of fear on their faces. Powerful witches, who’d devoted their entire lives to the craft, were afraid of her.

“I can’t,” she said to Giles when they arrived at her room. “They’re scared of me.”

“They aren’t afraid, Willow,” Giles gently said as he sat her bags on the bed. “They just need some time to understand.”

“No, no…they’re afraid I’m going to get all veiny and black-eyed on them. Why can’t I just recover in Sunnydale?”

“Because it’s not an option. You’ll be all right here and I’ll be in the next room. One of the witches will be by soon with something to help with the withdrawals. If you need to chat later, I’ll be in my room.”

Willow wanted to beg him to stay but she knew she couldn’t depend on him. Instead, she said goodnight and sunk down on her bed. And, as the shadows in the room darkened, she turned on the bedside lamp, knowing it would stay on all night.

Once again Willow was scared of the wicked witch. This time it wasn’t the one in the movies but the one inside of her.
